But the country’s influence on African football extends beyond the Super Eagles, with several players of Nigerian birth or descent representing other national teams on the continent.

Some were born in Nigeria before building their careers elsewhere. Others were born in different countries but have Nigerian parents or family roots, giving them eligibility to represent the country of their heritage as well as the nation where they grew up.

That has created some fascinating cases across African international football. Benin, South Africa and Ghana are among the countries that have benefited from players with Nigerian connections, with some of them becoming important members of their respective national teams.

Here are five players with Nigerian roots who have chosen to represent other African nations.

Junior Olaitan – Benin

Junior Olaitan is one of the most established names on this list and has become an important part of Benin’s midfield.

Born in Porto-Novo to a Nigerian father and Beninese mother, Olaitan was raised in Nigeria before beginning his professional career with Ayema in Benin. He subsequently moved to France, where he played for Niort and Troyes, before spells with Grenoble and Göztepe.

The 24-year-old joined Beşiktaş this year, having previously played several Turkish league matches for Göztepe during the 2025-26 season. He has since become a regular contributor in Turkey.

His international career began in 2021, and the numbers underline his importance to Benin. Olaitan has made 40 appearances, scored three goals and provided six assists for the Cheetahs. During the 2026 World Cup qualifiers alone, he played nine matches, contributing one goal and two assists.

If there is one player on this list who can genuinely be described as Nigerian-born, it is Aiyegun Tosin.

The Lagos-born forward came through Real Sapphire in Nigeria before moving to Latvia, where he became one of the league’s most prolific attackers with Ventspils. He scored 33 goals in 72 appearances for the club.

His form earned him a move to FC Zürich, where he scored 31 goals in 91 appearances, before joining French club Lorient in 2023 in a reported €4 million transfer.

Tosin has also built a significant international career with Benin. He made his debut against Liberia in March 2022 and scored in a 4-0 victory.

Since making his Benin debut Tosin has made 19 appearances for Benin, scoring four goals and providing one assist. He also featured at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, appearing in all four of Benin’s matches at the tournament.

His club numbers have remained respectable too. In the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season, Tosin made 27 appearances and scored five goals, while he has started the 2026-27 campaign with impressive performances for Lorient.

Ime Okon’s story is different. He was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and South African mother, and grew up in South Africa. For years, there was therefore a genuine possibility that he could eventually play for the Super Eagles.

In 2023, while still a teenager at SuperSport United, Okon admitted that he had not yet decided between Nigeria and South Africa. He eventually chose Bafana Bafana, explaining later that South Africa was the country he regarded as home.

The centre-back made his senior international debut against Mozambique at the 2025 COSAFA Cup and scored his first international goal against Zimbabwe three days later.

His club career has also taken a significant step forward. After making 43 league appearances and scoring once for SuperSport United, Okon moved to German club Hannover 96 in 2025.

He made 25 2. Bundesliga appearances and scored twice in 2025-26. By the current 2026-27 campaign, he had appeared in each of Hannover’s first six league matches, albeit mostly from the bench.

The Lagos-born striker developed at 36 Lion FC in Nigeria before moving to AS Cotonou in Benin and subsequently continuing his career in the Czech Republic and Latvia.

His goals in Latvia have now earned him a place in Benin’s senior setup.

And the numbers explain why. Oloko scored 26 goals and supplied six assists in 30 matches across all competitions for Liepāja in 2026. That remarkable scoring record earned him his first senior Benin call-up from coach Gernot Rohr in September 2026.

Agyekum spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Belgian club Cercle Brugge, making 33 league appearances and scoring twice. His performances earned him a permanent move to the Belgian club in 2025.

Internationally, Agyekum chose Ghana despite having a Nigerian mother, giving him a direct family connection to Nigeria. He made his senior Black Stars debut on March 21, 2025, coming on for the final eight minutes of Ghana’s 5-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Chad.

Africa has produced some of football’s greatest players, but only eight have managed to finish inside the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or rankings, as it has been dominated by Europeans and South Africans.

The list of African players who have made the cut stretches from George Weah’s historic triumph in 1995 to Achraf Hakimi’s sixth-place finish in 2025.

It includes legendary names such as Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o, as well as modern stars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané.

But despite Nigeria’s long history of producing elite footballers who have played in the big leagues, only one Nigerian has achieved the feat.

In this article, we highlight the eight Africans who have made the Ballon d’Or top 10 and reveal the only Nigerian who has been able to achieve such feat.

1. George Weah – Liberia

The Liberian striker became the first African — and remains the only one — to win the award when he finished first in 1995.

Weah’s triumph came after a remarkable campaign with AC Milan, having already won the UEFA Champions League with the Italian club in 1994.

His achievement remains unmatched by another African player nearly three decades later.

In fact, the next-best finish by an African belongs to Sadio Mané, who came second in 2022.

2. Didier Drogba – Côte d’Ivoire

Didier Drogba established himself as one of the world’s best forwards during his Chelsea career, and the Ballon d’Or rankings reflected his status.

The Ivorian’s best finish came in 2007, when he placed fourth behind Kaká, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Drogba also finished eighth in 2006, ninth in 2009 and 2010, and eighth again in 2012.

His four top-10 finishes make him one of the most consistent African names in Ballon d’Or history.

3. Samuel Eto’o – Cameroon

Samuel Eto’o was another African forward who regularly competed among the world’s elite.

The Cameroon legend finished fifth in the 2009 Ballon d’Or voting after helping Barcelona win a historic treble before moving to Inter Milan that summer.

He had previously finished sixth in 2006 and later returned to the top 10 with an eighth-place finish in 2011.

Eto’o’s fifth-place finish in 2009 remains the best of his career.

4. Sadio Mané – Senegal

Sadio Mané came closer than any African player to matching George Weah when he finished second in the 2022 Ballon d’Or.

The Senegalese forward was rewarded after an outstanding season with Liverpool and a landmark international year with Senegal.

He helped his country win their first Africa Cup of Nations title in early 2022 before reaching the World Cup later that year.

Mané had already finished fourth in 2019, making him one of the few Africans to record multiple top-five finishes.

His second-place finish remains the highest by an African player since Weah’s victory.

5. Riyad Mahrez – Algeria

Riyad Mahrez entered the Ballon d’Or top 10 after one of the biggest title-winning surprises in Premier League history.

The Algerian finished seventh in 2016 after playing a starring role in Leicester City’s extraordinary Premier League triumph.

Mahrez scored 17 league goals and provided 11 assists during Leicester’s title-winning campaign, while also winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

His seventh-place Ballon d’Or finish remains his best.

6. Mohamed Salah – Egypt

Mohamed Salah has arguably been Africa’s most consistent Ballon d’Or contender of the modern era.

The Egyptian first broke into the top 10 in 2018, finishing sixth after his spectacular debut season at Liverpool.

He then finished fifth in 2019, seventh in 2021 and fifth again in 2022.

Salah reached a new high in 2025, finishing fourth with 657 points. Only Ousmane Dembélé, Lamine Yamal and Vitinha finished ahead of him.

His fourth-place finish also made him the highest-ranked African in the 2025 voting, as Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi came sixth.

7. Victor Osimhen – Nigeria

Victor Osimhen is the only Nigerian to have broken into the Ballon d’Or top 10. The Super Eagles striker finished eighth in 2023 after a spectacular campaign with Napoli.

Osimhen scored 26 Serie A goals as Napoli won their first league title in 33 years and also claimed the league’s Golden Boot.

His eighth-place finish made him the first Nigerian to ever reach the Ballon d’Or top 10. Osimhen also finished ahead of Mohamed Salah, who was 11th that year.

For Nigeria, the achievement remains a landmark moment in the country’s individual football history.

8. Achraf Hakimi – Morocco

Achraf Hakimi became the latest African to join this exclusive club in 2025.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender finished sixth in the Ballon d’Or voting, collecting 484 points.

His position was particularly notable because he finished ahead of some of the world’s biggest attacking stars.

Hakimi’s sixth-place finish came in a season in which PSG won the Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions.

He was the second African in the 2025 top 10, alongside Salah.

Regular football for Zadok Yohanna

One major reason why a January loan move could make sense for Yohanna is the chance to play regular first-team football.

The Nigerian youngster faces strong competition for places at Brighton, with the club having several attacking options, including fellow Nigerian Femi Azeez, who joined on deadline day from Championship side Millwall.

If Yohanna remains at Brighton without getting enough opportunities, his playing time could be limited, especially as he continues to adapt to the demands of English football.

A loan move to a club where he can play regularly could give him the minutes he needs to regain his rhythm, build confidence and continue developing.

George Ilenikhena: How Eric Chelle convinced Al-Ittihad striker to choose Nigeria

George Ilenikhena’s decision to represent Nigeria was not simply a choice between the country of his birth and the nation where he grew up, as Eric Chelle played an important role in bringing the Al-Ittihad striker into the Super Eagles fold, Afrik-Foot reports.

Born in Lagos on August 16, 2006, Ilenikhena moved to France with his family when he was three and developed his football career there, progressing through Antony Football Evolution before joining Amiens.

His development eventually took him to Royal Antwerp and Monaco, where he scored memorable UEFA Champions League goals against Barcelona before completing a €33 million move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad in February 2026.

That French connection also meant Ilenikhena was eligible to represent France and had been involved with the country’s Under-16 setup. Nigeria, therefore, had a player whose football education and early international exposure were heavily shaped by France.

Yet by July, reports emerged that the 20-year-old had decided to represent the Super Eagles following discussions with Chelle.

The circumstances behind that decision now provide an insight into how the Nigeria coach managed to persuade one of the country’s most promising young strikers to commit to the national team.

Eric Chelle made the approach personal

Chelle’s ability to communicate with Ilenikhena in French appears to have been an important part of the relationship.

At the media parlay in the Super Eagles camp in Uyo, ahead of the clash against Madagascar, Ilenikhena’s French influence was noticeable when he spoke English, with his strong French accent reflecting the environment in which he grew up.

More importantly, his conversations with Chelle took place in French. That detail matters because Chelle was not approaching a player whose identity had been shaped in Nigeria.

Ilenikhena left the country as a three-year-old, grew up in the Paris suburbs and developed through the French football system. His pathway from Antony to Amiens eventually opened the door to professional football in Belgium and France, while he also had exposure to the French youth team.

Chelle, himself a French-born coach who spent much of his playing and coaching career in the French-speaking football environment, had a natural linguistic and cultural connection with the striker.

That does not mean language alone decided Ilenikhena’s international future, but it gave Chelle a way of communicating directly with a young player whose upbringing was predominantly French.

To make the striker feel at home in the Nigerian camp, Tolu Arokodare also spoke French to the 20-year-old.

Chelle had been tracking Ilenikhena for months

Several reports revealed that Chelle had been chasing the striker for almost a year and had identified him as one of his major targets while looking for additional attacking options behind Victor Osimhen.

However, the subsequent clarification from Ilenikhena’s representative added an important layer to the story.

His camp insisted on September 21 that the striker had never previously rejected a Nigeria invitation, because he had not actually received one before the current call-up.

According to his representative, contacts between Nigeria and Ilenikhena began early in 2026, but the player was injured and missed the first six months of his Al-Ittihad spell.

When Chelle contacted him before the start of the new season, the response was immediate.

The representative said it was the “first and only time” an invitation had come from Nigeria and that Ilenikhena gave his approval straight away.

The Instagram clue came before the call-up

There was also a public indication that Chelle was paying close attention to Ilenikhena before his eventual invitation.

On September 9, Ilenikhena posted a photograph of himself in a Super Eagles shirt beside a Nigerian eagle statue, accompanied by the caption “Naija”.

The post came after his explosive start to the season with Al-Ittihad and was liked by Chelle, providing an early public signal of the relationship between the player and the coach. The timing was significant.

By September 18, Chelle made the decision official by naming Ilenikhena in Nigeria’s 24-man squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

George Ilenikhena gives Chelle another attacking option

The timing of the decision could hardly be more significant for Nigeria. Osimhen was initially included in Chelle’s squad despite an injury, but he has been ruled out of the September qualifiers.

That leaves Chelle with Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare and Ilenikhena among his central attacking options, while Taiwo Awoniyi was later called up as Osimhen’s replacement.

Nigeria have secured a forward who was developed in France, exposed to French youth football and had a genuine alternative international pathway.

Chelle’s role in that decision should not be overstated: Ilenikhena ultimately made the choice himself.

Yet the sequence of events — the coach’s sustained interest, conversations with the player, the French-language connection, the public social-media signal and eventually the first senior call-up — suggests Chelle did more than simply wait for the striker to become available.

He actively built the relationship that helped bring Ilenikhena to the Super Eagles.

Madagascar’s captain is arguably the most important player in Corentin Martins’ midfield.

Raveloson joined Turkish side Amedspor in the summer and has started all six of their league matches this season, operating primarily as a defensive midfielder. He has also already registered an assist.

His importance goes beyond what he produces with the ball. Raveloson provides protection in front of the defence, wins duels and can help Madagascar transition quickly after recovering possession.

Nigeria’s midfielders will therefore need to prevent him from dictating the tempo. Interestingly, Raveloson is teammates with one Nigerian player Gift Orban.

Lapoussin offers Madagascar a completely different threat. The midfielder has enjoyed a very good campaign at Guangxi Hengchen, recording nine goals and seven assists for his side.

During the last World Cup qualifying cycle with Madagascar, he contributed one goal and two assists in six World Cup qualifying appearances.

His ability to carry the ball and create from the left means Ola Aina or whichever player operates on Nigeria’s right could have plenty of defensive work. He has an immense work rate and is a good dribbler. If he ticks, Madagascar tick.

Hakim Abdallah

Abdallah is another player Nigeria cannot afford to ignore.

The UTA Arad forward scored six goals and provided three assists in 33 league appearances during the 2025/26 campaign. He has also started the new season regularly, scoring twice in his first 10 league appearances.

With Osimhen unavailable, Nigeria will be expected to dominate possession. That could leave spaces behind the Super Eagles if their full-backs push forward, giving Abdallah an opportunity to attack them in transition.

The 28-year-old is physically strong and quick. So he must never be left alone with just one defender to beat.

Warren Caddy

Caddy brings European experience and a proven record of contributing to Madagascar’s attack.

The forward scored twice and supplied three assists during Madagascar’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, featuring in six matches and starting five.

His ability to contribute both goals and assists makes him particularly dangerous when Madagascar break quickly. He is very direct and likes to go straight at goal when the opportunities arrive.

Marco Ilaimaharitra

The experienced defensive midfielder gives Madagascar another source of composure in the middle of the pitch.

Ilaimaharitra has spent much of his career in Belgian football and is currently with Standard Liège. His experience at club level and with the national team makes him one of the players capable of helping Madagascar withstand pressure before launching attacks of their own.

For Chelle, the priority will be making sure these players are not allowed to dictate the game.

Nigeria have the quality to control the contest, but Madagascar have already shown they can trouble the Super Eagles. The Barea famously defeated Nigeria 2-0 at the 2019 AFCON.

The Super Eagles therefore need concentration as much as quality when the two teams meet in Uyo.

Arthur Chukwuezugo Okonkwo has revealed the two key qualities that attracted him to former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, with the Super Eagles newcomer looking to draw inspiration from one of the Premier League’s most accomplished goalkeepers, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper grew up watching Van der Sar after his father, a Manchester United supporter, introduced him to the Dutchman’s performances during his formative years.

For Okonkwo, however, the attraction was not simply about Van der Sar’s reputation or the trophies he won at Manchester United and Ajax.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper, who stands at 6ft 6in, believes there are similarities between his own physical profile and that of the former Netherlands international, making Van der Sar a natural reference point for his development.

“I think I like his style of play because he’s a very tall goalkeeper. I’ve always been tall, even in the youth teams. I’m 6ft6in,” Okonkwo said in an interview with AY Suga.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the 27-year-old will miss both September qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau as he continues his recovery.

Nigeria vs Madagascar is one of the matches that will open the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign on Friday, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles return to a fixture that has produced one of the biggest shocks in the AFCON history of Nigerian football.

Eric Chelle has named a 24-man squad for the qualifying campaign, including Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon. Nigeria will host the Barea at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.

Nigeria and Madagascar have met five times at senior level. The Super Eagles have won three, drawn one and lost one, scoring five goals and conceding two. All five encounters came in AFCON competition, with four played in qualifying and the latest taking place at the 2019 tournament in Egypt.

5 Nigeria vs Madagascar battles

2000: Madagascar 0-0 Nigeria

The first Nigeria vs Madagascar meeting came on October 7, 2000, during the qualifying race for the 2002 AFCON.

Nigeria travelled to Antananarivo for a Group 1 clash at the Alarobia Municipal Stadium, but neither side found the net.

The 0-0 draw gave both teams one point and left Nigeria waiting for their first goal against Madagascar.

Nigeria eventually finished top of the group with 14 points from six matches, while Madagascar collected five points and finished third.

2001: Akwuegbu settles it in four minutes

The return Nigeria vs Madagascar fixture in the same qualifying campaign produced the Super Eagles’ first victory over the Barea.

Nigeria defeated Madagascar 1-0 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on June 2, 2001.

Benedict Akwuegbu struck in the fourth minute, giving the Super Eagles an early lead they protected until the final whistle.

The result was important in Nigeria’s successful qualification campaign because the Super Eagles finished first in Group 1 without losing any of their six matches.

Akwuegbu’s early goal also ended the wait for Nigeria’s first goal against Madagascar after the goalless meeting eight months earlier.

2010: Martins and Eneramo strike in Calabar

The teams did not meet again until September 5, 2010, when they were drawn together in the qualifying competition for the 2012 AFCON.

Nigeria hosted Madagascar at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar and produced a 2-0 victory.

Obafemi Martins opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Michael Eneramo doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time.

Both goals came before the interval, giving Nigeria a comfortable platform for the second half.

The win put Nigeria on three points in Group B alongside Guinea after the opening round of matches, while Madagascar started with no points.

The result also extended Nigeria’s unbeaten record against the Barea to three matches.

2011: Yobo and Nsofor win it again

The Super Eagles returned to Antananarivo on September 4, 2011, for the reverse Nigeria vs Madagascar fixture in the same AFCON qualifying campaign.

The match at Stade Mahamasina was goalless at half-time, but Nigeria broke through after the restart.

Captain Joseph Yobo put the Super Eagles ahead in the 68th minute before Obinna Nsofor added a second seven minutes later.

Nigeria’s 2-0 victory gave them three wins and one draw from their first four meetings with Madagascar.

More importantly, the Barea had still failed to score against Nigeria across those four games.

Nigeria finished second in Group B with 11 points, while Madagascar ended the campaign bottom with just one point.

Everything pointed towards Nigeria having the upper hand in the fixture.

Then came Alexandria.

2019: Madagascar turn the history upside down

The fifth meeting was completely different. Nigeria and Madagascar met at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt on June 30, with both teams already in control of their own qualification for the knockout stage.

Madagascar stunned the Super Eagles 2-0 at Alexandria Stadium to win Group B with seven points, while Nigeria finished second on six.

Lalaina Nomenjanahary opened the scoring in the 13th minute after Nigeria struggled to play out from the back.

John Ogu’s under-hit pass allowed Nomenjanahary to steal possession, round the goalkeeper and finish into an empty net.

Madagascar then doubled their lead eight minutes after half-time when Carolus Andriamatsinoro’s long-range free-kick took a deflection off Wilfred Ndidi and went into the net.

Nigeria had more possession but could not turn it into enough danger, while Madagascar’s pressing caused problems throughout the game.

The defeat was Madagascar’s first victory over Nigeria and their first goals against the Super Eagles. It also gave the Barea top spot in a group containing Nigeria, Guinea and Burundi.

The Super Eagles finished that tournament with a bronze medal after losing in the semifinals to Algeria.
