Thursday night at Villa Park carries the kind of weight that does not come along very often in English football, as two Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, go head to head for a place in the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul.

Nottingham Forest arrive in Birmingham holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg at the City Ground, where Chris Wood’s second-half penalty secured a result that puts the Tricky Trees within 90 minutes of their first major European final since 1980 and gives Aston Villa a formidable deficit to overturn in front of their own supporters.

Nigeria Watch: Two Super Eagles Stories, One Very Different Outcome

Two Nigerian internationals cast long shadows over this tie, though the circumstances facing each of them could not be more different.

Ola Aina has been a consistent and underappreciated part of Forest’s remarkable run to the last four, making six Europa League appearances from right back since his return from a long-term hamstring injury that wiped out the opening months of his 2025-26 campaign.

The 29-year-old, who committed his future to the City Ground by extending his contract to 2028 last summer, was integral to the defensive solidity that helped Forest beat Fenerbahce, Midtjylland and Porto to reach this stage, and his aerial ability, tackle success and forward threat had made him a key figure in Vitor Pereira’s system.

It is a cruel blow, then, that a knock picked up in recent weeks now looks set to rule him out of the biggest game in Forest’s recent European history, with the injury list showing a return date of May 9, two days after this match.

His compatriot Taiwo Awoniyi tells a different kind of story entirely, and for Nigerian football fans following this tie it is one laced with frustration.

The striker was left out of Forest’s UEFA Europa League squad entirely at the start of the season, a decision that UEFA registration rules have made permanent for this campaign, meaning that despite scoring twice in a starring role in Monday’s 3-1 Premier League win over Chelsea, including marking his 100th Forest appearance with a brace, Awoniyi simply cannot play on Thursday night.

Under Vitor Pereira he had fallen so far down the pecking order that he had managed just 63 minutes of action since the Portuguese coach arrived in February, yet that Chelsea performance proved he still has everything it takes at this level, only for it to count for absolutely nothing when the Europa League semi-final comes calling.

The contrast between the two Super Eagles players says everything about the unpredictable nature of football at the sharp end of the season.

Match Preview: The State of Play Heading Into the Second Leg

Aston Villa enter this second leg with a mountain to climb and a proud European home record to lean on, trailing 1-0 on aggregate but knowing that Villa Park has been a fortress in continental competition this season.

Unai Emery’s side finished second in the Europa League league phase, dispatched Lille in the round of 16 and swept aside Bologna in the quarter-finals, and they have now won nine consecutive European fixtures at home, scoring in 31 of their last 32 at Villa Park in Europe.

Their domestic form is the pressing concern, though.

Three consecutive Premier League defeats, including a dismal 2-1 home loss to relegation-threatened Tottenham on Sunday, represent their worst run since 2024, and while Emery rested key players for that game, the broader pattern of five losses from eight league matches is impossible to ignore.

Villa cling to fifth place and still have Champions League qualification in their sights, but right now their attention must shift entirely to Europe, where they remain the more credible force.

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, are coming into this game in quite extraordinary form.

Their 10-game unbeaten run under Pereira, featuring seven wins and three draws, has completely transformed the mood around the City Ground, where a relegation battle was very much the primary concern when the Portuguese coach took charge in February.

Six points clear of the drop zone after that Chelsea result, Forest are now playing with a confidence that is palpable, and the question for Thursday is whether they can replicate the discipline and ruthlessness that earned them such a valuable first-leg result.

Villa’s Europa League form in knockout football, however, remains exceptional, and Emery’s tactical nous in this competition specifically is a factor that cannot be dismissed.

Head-to-Head Record: History Favours the Hosts

In the long sweep of meetings between these two clubs, Aston Villa hold the clear advantage.

Going back to their very first encounter in the 1880-81 FA Cup, Villa have accumulated 64 victories in 136 meetings against Forest, who have won 40, with 32 draws completing the picture.

Emery faces a more settled picture than Pereira in terms of availability, with his first-choice squad largely available after Sunday’s rotated lineup was found wanting against Spurs.

Amadou Onana (knee, out until May 24) and Boubacar Kamara (knee, out until June) are both absent, as is the ineligible Ross Barkley.

John McGinn picked up a minor muscular issue that kept him out of the Spurs defeat, but his expected return date aligns with Thursday and he should be in contention to start, with Emery having kept him fresh for exactly this occasion.

Ollie Watkins, who was omitted from the starting line-up on Sunday, returns to lead the attack, bringing with him four Europa League goals this season, making him Villa’s top scorer in the competition.

Morgan Rogers is the player Forest will be most wary of; the winger has been directly involved in five goals across his six Europa League home appearances this season, making him the most dangerous weapon in Emery’s attacking arsenal at Villa Park.

Ezri Konsa and Diego Torres anchor a defence that is expected to be back to full strength, with Matty Cash restored at right back after his cameo off the bench in the first leg.

Zach Abbott is the most likely replacement despite a minor head concern of his own from the Chelsea game, while Dan Ndoye’s availability remains uncertain after his own knock.

Murillo, Ibrahim Sangare, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Nicolo Savona, John Victor and Willy Boly all remain out with longer-term injuries.

The biggest doubt of all surrounds Morgan Gibbs-White, who sustained a deep facial laceration in a clash of heads with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez on Monday, forcing him off in the 66th minute.

Pereira was cautiously optimistic afterwards, confirming no concussion but asking his medical staff to “work magic” to get his talisman fit in time.

Gibbs-White, who has 10 Premier League goals and three assists since the turn of the year, would be a massive loss if he cannot start, and his absence would significantly reduce Forest’s ability to unlock a Villa defence that has kept three clean sheets in the knockout phase alone.

Chris Wood is certain to lead the line, bringing with him the confidence of having scored the winner in the first leg as well as the milestone of netting his 200th professional goal.

Igor Jesus, who has contributed five away goals in the Europa League this season, including the most shots on target of any player in the competition, will partner Wood in Pereira’s two-striker system.

Vitor Pereira’s Europa League experience is far more recent and far more condensed, having only taken charge of Forest in February as the club’s fourth manager of the season.

The Portuguese coach arrived with a clear brief of avoiding relegation after guiding Wolverhampton Wanderers to survival in 2024-25, and he has delivered on that and then some.

As interest in Victor Osimhen mounts, Galatasaray have decided they will not let their Super Eagles star leave unless they receive a massive fee.

According to Sporx, the club is unwilling to sell. However, they are “laying an ambush” for the Nigerian’s suitors, as they will only listen to offers in the region of €140 million.

The three-time continental champions currently hold the record for the most match wins by an African team at the FIFA World Cup, with 6 victories.

However, with the Super Eagles set to miss out on the 2026 tournament, rivals could close in and rewrite the record books.

Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco and Senegal all sit just one win behind Nigeria, each with five victories. With three of those nations heading to the 2026 finals, the pressure is firmly on the Super Eagles’ legacy.

Nigeria’s six World Cup wins came across six different tournaments, starting with a memorable debut at USA 1994. That campaign remains iconic.

In June 1994, in Dallas, Rashidi Yekini wrote his name into history by scoring Nigeria’s first World Cup goal in a 3-0 win over Bulgaria. Daniel Amokachi and Emmanuel Amunike added the others, sealing one of Africa’s most dominant victories on the global stage.

Days later, Nigeria defeated Greece 2-0 in Boston, with Finidi George and Amokachi on the scoresheet, confirming their place in the knockout rounds.

Four years on, at France 1998, the Super Eagles produced one of their greatest performances, beating Spain 3-2 in Nantes thanks to goals from Mutiu Adepoju, an Andoni Zubizarreta own goal, and a stunning late strike from Sunday Oliseh. The team also edged Bulgaria 1-0 in that tournament through a Victor Ikpeba strike.

Nigeria’s more recent World Cup wins came in 2014 and 2018. Peter Osaze Odemwingie’s goal secured a 1-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cuiabá, while Ahmed Musa scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Iceland in Volgograd four years later. Musa, with four goals, remains Nigeria’s all-time top scorer at the tournament.

Across those campaigns, Nigeria have scored 23 World Cup goals, another African record, and reached the Round of 16 on three occasions (1994, 1998, 2014).

Super Eagles record: Senegal, Morocco lead the chase in 2026

The real danger now comes from the present. Morocco and Senegal, both on five wins, arrive at the 2026 World Cup in strong form and with favourable group-stage opportunities.

Morocco, who made history by finishing fourth at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the best-ever performance by an African side, have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti. Realistically, fixtures against Haiti and Scotland offer clear chances to secure at least one or two wins.

Senegal, quarter-finalists in 2002, are in Group I with France, Iraq and Norway. While France present a major hurdle, matches against Iraq and Norway could provide the wins needed to match or surpass Nigeria’s tally.

Ghana, also on five wins, face a tougher challenge in Group L against England, Croatia and Panama. Cameroon, another nation with five wins, have failed to qualify for the tournament.

If Morocco or Senegal win two matches in the 2026 group stage, they would move to seven total World Cup victories, overtaking Nigeria’s long-standing record.

Interestingly, African teams have recorded 37 wins at the World Cup since Tunisia’s historic 3-1 victory over Mexico in Argentina 1978, the continent’s first. For the first time in history, ten African teams will participate at the World Cup, providing a lot of chances for more wins to be recorded for the continent.

Nigerians, though, will watch the tournament – set to be played across the United States, Canada and Mexico – with a special focus on Senegal, Ghana, and Morocco as they aim to overtake the Super Eagles as Africa’s shining light at the World Cup.

Kelechi Iheanacho: Celtic boss provides update on Super Eagles star’s future

Celtic head coach Martin O’Neill has provided clarity on the future of Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho at the club, Afrik-Foot reports.

Iheanacho joined the Scottish champions on a free transfer last summer after leaving Sevilla, where he struggled to make an impact and departed after just one season.

Despite an encouraging start to life in Scotland, the 29-year-old has endured a stop-start campaign, with injuries limiting him to just 20 appearances across all competitions so far. He was also left out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament by head coach Eric Chelle over fitness concerns.

However, Iheanacho has recently returned to full fitness and looks to be returning to his best. He has proven to be decisive for Celtic over the last few weeks, with four goals in his last five appearances.

The Super Eagles forward netted a brace in the Scottish Cup semifinal win over St Mirren and also scored the winner in the 2–1 victory over Hibernian last weekend, which kept their title hopes alive.

Martin O’Neill shares update on Iheanacho’s future

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho arrived at Celtic last summer hoping to revive his career after an underwhelming spell at Sevilla. However, his long-term future remains uncertain ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with no talks of an extension so far.

The 29-year-old has returned to form in recent weeks, which could open the door to a new deal at Celtic and keep him at the club at least until the coming season.

Speaking in an interview, O’Neill explained that no decision has been made regarding the Super Eagles forward’s future.

“That’s a conversation for another day. Right now, his fitness is the most important thing, and he has to keep proving that he’s fit on the field”, the Celtic boss said, via TribalFootball.

“What he’s done for us has been terrific, especially recently. The club will weigh up his overall contribution against his injuries over the whole season.

“Although he says he’s very young, time does catch up with players—though I think he’s only 29 or 30. If the club keeps him, he would benefit greatly from a proper three or four-week pre-season”, O’Neill concluded.

For now, Iheanacho’s focus remains on helping Celtic in their push for the league title, as well as the Scottish Cup final later this month, before a decision can now be made over his next move.

Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has been named Man of the Match following the Toffees’ dramatic 3-3 Premier League draw against Man City on Monday, Afrik-Foot reports.

The contest, played at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium, delivered six goals, late drama, and a performance full of grit from Iroegbunam, who stepped in for the injured Idrissa Gueye.

Tasked with breaking up City’s rhythm, the 22-year-old produced a tireless display in midfield, making seven tackles and several key interceptions to frustrate the visitors.

Despite strong competition for the award, Iroegbunam was officially recognised for his defensive impact. Everton substitute Thierno Barry, who scored twice, or Merlin Röhl could have taken the prize. The same goes for Man City winger Jérémy Doku, whose two goals, including a stoppage-time equaliser, stole the spotlight.

Interestingly, Doku and Barry have been included in the Premier League nominations for the Player of the Matchweek, which has no room for Iroegbunam. Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi is considered favourite to win that award, though, following his excellent showing for Forest at Chelsea.

Still, Iroegbunam’s discipline, energy, and timing in key moments earned him the honour of the official best player of the Everton vs Man City match.

Six-goal Everton thriller shakes Man City title hopes

The match itself unfolded in two clear phases. Manchester City dominated early on, controlling possession and dictating play. Their pressure paid off in the 43rd minute when Jérémy Doku curled a fine effort into the top corner after being set up by Rayan Cherki.

After the break, however, the game turned chaotic. Everton found a way back in the 68th minute when a poor back-pass from Marc Guéhi was punished by Thierno Barry, who calmly finished to make it 1-1. Just five minutes later, defender Jake O’Brien powered in a header from a James Garner corner to put the hosts ahead.

Barry struck again in the 81st minute to seemingly seal a famous victory for David Moyes’ side. But City responded immediately through Erling Haaland, setting up a tense finish.

Deep into stoppage time, in the 97th minute, Doku scored his second of the night to rescue a point for City and cap a breathless encounter.

The result could prove costly for City’s title defence, leaving them five points behind leaders Arsenal with four games remaining for the former champions.

Still, the night belonged to Iroegbunam, whose performance could strengthen calls for his inclusion in Nigeria’s national setup.

The former Aston Villa star has now made 26 appearances in the Premier League this term, providing two assists and several defensive interventions.

Nurtured through the England youth system, Iroegbunam remains eligible to play for Nigeria and he is reportedly on the radar of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

The ex-QPR star may require a one-time FIFA approved switch to play for the Super Eagles and will therefore not be under consideration for Nigeria’s squad to the Unity Cup later this month.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has revealed his decision on the future of Super Eagles target William Osula, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Denmark-born forward was on target again last weekend, helping the Magpies end a five-game losing streak across all competitions. Newcastle had suffered four consecutive Premier League defeats during that run, which had dashed their hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.

Osula opened the scoring in the 3-1 win over Brighton at St James’ Park and remained a constant threat to their backline throughout the encounter. He was eventually substituted in the 68th minute to a warm ovation from the home supporters for his performance, with Yoane Wissa coming on for him.
