What stands out

Ronwen Williams starts in goal and wears the captain’s armband. Ricardo Goss, who had started the last three matches, is on the bench. Teboho Mokoena was a doubt with a recurring knee problem and is in the midfield alongside Marcelo Allende and Santos.

Brayan León leads the attack with Tashreeq Matthews, who has been named in the XI. Iqraam Rayners, who scored the winner in the 1-0 Carling Knockout quarter-final win over Golden Arrows, is among the substitutes. Mothobi Mvala, back from more than a year out, is also on the bench, as are Bathusi Aubaas, Siyanda Ndlovu and Antonio Van Wyk.

Former Orlando Pirates defender Innocent Chikoya has shared what he feels is the problem with Kaizer Chiefs, who have been inconsistent this season.

Chiefs have just one win in their last seven matches while in the league, they are 12 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and 11 adrift of second-placed Orlando Pirates.

Their last game was the Soweto derby, when they lost 2-1 to Orlando Pirates, and Chikoya says that game demonstrated why Amakhosi are behind the Buccaneers and Sundowns.

Ex-Pirates star on why Chiefs are struggling

Chiefs dominated in the first half and created a number of chances but failed to utilise them only to fizzle out after the break and allow Pirates to take control and score the winning goal.

“Kaizer Chiefs are not in the same category as Orlando Pirates at present,” Chikoya told KickOff.

“The dynamics at Pirates at the moment are formidable. This Pirates side reminds me of the team from the Brandon Silent and Helman Mkhalele era. Chiefs caused problems in the first half, but there was little from them in the second. They do not have enough depth on the bench,” he added.

“In the second half, Chiefs needed a player who could provide a Plan B. They did not cope, and they did not have a second option.”

Coach Fernando da Cruz has had to rely on young players and even so, some of his big hitters such as Langelihle Phili, Khanyisa Mayo, Rushiwn Dortley, Bradley Cross, Flavio da Silva and Thabiso Monyane have been absent through injury, denying the French coach an opportunity to choose a strong squad.

The signing of Bafana Bafana winger Khanyisa Mayo is seen as a way of addressing their lack of quality in depth but observers still feel that is not enough to compete with Sundowns and Pirates.

How Mamelodi Sundowns arrive

Sundowns lead the Betway Premiership after 10 games, with eight wins and two draws, 27 goals scored and nine conceded. They have won three and drawn two of their last five matches in all competitions, scoring seven and conceding two, including a 1-0 Carling Knockout quarter-final win over Golden Arrows and a 4-1 home win over Durban City. In October they beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 to win the MTN8.

Khuliso Mudau (Achilles, expected back around March), Grant Kekana and Keegan Johannes are out. Teboho Mokoena (knee ligament) and Ronwen Williams are doubts, and Ricardo Goss has started the last three matches. Mothobi Mvala is back to full fitness after more than a year out. Brayan Leon has three league goals and 11 shots on target this season, the most in the squad, and Iqraam Rayners scored the Carling Knockout winner.

How USM Alger arrive

USM Alger are sixth in the Algerian Ligue 1 with 14 points from seven games, three points behind leaders CR Belouizdad. They have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five league games, most recently a 2-0 win over CS Constantine on 31 October. They won the Confederation Cup in May, beating Zamalek 8-7 on penalties, and also won the Algerian Cup. No injuries or suspensions have been reported.

Mohamed El Amine Ramdaoui, 21, has five league goals, about half the team’s league total, and Dramane Kamagate scored the opening goal in the Algerian Cup final. Lamine Ndiaye, 70, joined in February 2026 and has had his contract extended. He won the 2010 Champions League with TP Mazembe.

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has insisted that he will not be boxed into a corner about how she should act on the touchline.

Ouaddou is normally an animated figure on the touchline and this was the case again in the Carling Knockout quarter-final against Sekhukhune United on Saturday.

Pirates won 1-0 thanks to youngster Mpho Padime’s goal but Ouaddou was not happy and made it known by his touchline antics for most of the match.

That style has been criticised in some quarters but the Pirates coach insists he will not be told by anyone how to behave.

“Look, we cannot improve the style, football is in my blood, I played this game for 17 years, everybody has his profile, some people are more calm, me I’m living the game, I’m living the action, of course I want everything to be perfect,” Ouaddou told SuperSport TV.

The Pirates coach had defended his move to reduce Appolli’s game time this season, saying it is down to his increased workload in the previous campaign and therefore he risks injuries.

Mamelodi Sundowns stand to pocket over R8 million from their CAF Super Cup if they become successful against Algerian club USM Alger.

Sundowns face USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday (15:00), looking to win their second title to add onto the one they claimed in 2017.

If they win the trophy, Sundowns will be awarded $500,000 (R8.2 million) which is the prize money for the winners but in case of defeat for Miguel Cardoso’s men, then they will receive the runners-up prize of $250,000 (R4.1 million).

Basadien credits family support after difficult spell

Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Fawaaz Basadien has credited his family for giving him the strength to deal with the tough times he was facing at the club.

Basadien joined Sundowns ahead of last season but found playing time hard to come by as he played just 11 games across all competitions and dropped out of the Bafana Bafana squad while he was linked with a move away from the club.

However, he has enjoyed a new lease of life this season, playing 12 games so far, and he admits it was a tough time that he would have struggled to deal with were it not for the support of his family.

“I am in a good space. Feeling good, I’ve been playing regularly, so I am in a good family,” he said.

“I think credit to my family and credit to the man above for giving me the strength and courage to overcome the situations I had last season and to be able to perform at a consistent level and to be in a better space this season.

“Credit to my family for getting me through those times, especially my wife and my son. If I come home to them, I always get some inspiration to do more,” Basadien told the media as per IOL.

Basadien says he used the difficulties of last season to motivate him for a change in fortunes this term.

Kaizer Chiefs head into their Carling Knockout quarter-final against Siwelele with no fresh injury concerns, giving coach Fernando da Cruz a chance to select a strong squad.

Chiefs will face Siwelele at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday from 18:00 and while Da Cruz has no new injuries, there is one forced change since defender Inacio Miguel is suspended.

Miguel was sent off in stoppage time of the Soweto Derby last weekend and in his absence, Rushwin Dortley is expected to partner Thabo Moloisane at centre-back.

Orlando Pirates legend Lebohang Mokoena has warned Kaizer Chiefs against attempting to sign Patrick Maswanganyi, whose future in Bahrain has come into question.

Tito, as he popularly known, has dropped down the pecking order at Bahraini club Al-Khaldiya, where his minutes have significantly reduced, and despite signing in September, he is already being linked with an exit.

However, Mokoena feels the playmaker would not be the right signing for Chiefs if he became available.

Tshepo Mokoena and Simphiwe Masilela had their opportunities, but while the former’s effort went wide, goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga denied the second-mentioned as the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the defending champions.

Bucs do just enough

The first seven minutes after the break saw Sekhukhune win a corner and a free-kick in a good position, but they didn’t make use of them notably the second one where Mpho Rammala sky-rocketed the ball.

The best chance, arguably, fell to Bucs in the 77th minute, but Appollis pass to Tshepang Moremi was a fraction late and Babina Noko survived. Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Sipho Chaine had to be at his best to pull a great save with five minutes to go, and ensure Pirates made the semis.

Chiefs lost the Soweto derby 2-1 to Orlando Pirates on October 31, a game that ended with centre-back Inácio Miguel sent off in stoppage time.

The defeat left Amakhosi fifth in the Betway Premiership with 14 points from nine games, 12 behind leaders Sundowns, and five of those nine ended in draws.

A 3-2 defeat at Marumo Gallants followed on October 30, and Siwelele have now conceded three goals in each of their last three league defeats.

A one-year story
