Sekhukhune United have warned Kaizer Chiefs of a tough date on Sunday when they meet in the Premier Soccer League fixture at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

The Glamour Boys come into the match with 48 points, six more than Babina Noko, who are fifth in the log. With three games to end the campaign, the odds favour the Soweto giants, who have been doing quite well in recent games, and come into the game as favourites.

Babina Noko’s caretaker coach Paulus Masehe is focused on getting a win this weekend.

Mamelodi Sundowns have been warned about relying on their captain, Themba Zwane, to deliver, especially in critical games.

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye made the observation after the recent outing between Masandawana and the Glamour Boys on Wednesday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, a fixture that ended 1-1.

The 36-year-old started the game against Amakhosi but struggled before being subbed in the second half for Nuno Santos. It was a change that increased the tempo in favour of the Brazilians, with more purpose especially in the final third.

According to Khanye, Mshishi is done, and his struggles against the Soweto giants underlined the same. It was an indirect message to Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos ahead of the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday was arguably their best result of the run, coming away from Pretoria with a point that virtually secures CAF football for next season, but it came at a cost.

Sekhukhune, meanwhile, are operating under interim management following the departure of Eric Tinkler last month.

Paulus Masehe and Andre Arendse have steadied the ship after a difficult initial spell that included a defeat to Stellenbosch and a draw with Marumo Gallants.

That result ended a run of three straight Chiefs wins in the fixture and proved that Sekhukhune are more than capable of going toe to toe with the Glamour Boys.

Last season’s two meetings were split, with Chiefs winning 2-0 at home in January 2025 and Sekhukhune earning a 1-1 draw at Peter Mokaba.

The biggest absence for Babina Noko is veteran striker Bradley Grobler, who has been sidelined since the start of April with an injury.

The 38-year-old has eight league goals this season, including a brace in the reverse fixture, and his absence up front is a major loss given he remains the team’s most clinical finisher.

Masehe will likely look to the same attacking setup that dismantled Chippa in midweek, with Keletso Makgalwa, Vusimuzi Mncube and Bright Ndlovu providing pace and directness in forward areas.

Thabang Monare and Siphesihle Mkhize should anchor the midfield, where Sekhukhune will need to win the physical battle.

There were no fresh injury concerns from the Chippa game, though the squad’s return from Eastern Cape was disrupted by flight issues at King Phalo Airport, and Masehe acknowledged they lost two or three days of preparation time as a result.

Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs have been hit hard in the treatment room ahead of this one.

Mduduzi Shabalala is out for the rest of the season after suffering a fractured right humerus during the Sundowns clash, an injury that required surgery.

The 22-year-old was one of the team’s most creative attacking players and his loss is a real blow for the final three games.

Siphesihle Ndlovu is suspended after picking up a booking against Sundowns, depriving Chiefs of one of their key midfielders.

Wandile Duba remains a doubt with a groin injury that kept him out of the Loftus trip, though the club’s medical team are working to get him fit before the end of the campaign.

George Matlou is also expected to miss out with a knee problem.

Gaston Sirino, who came on as a substitute against Sundowns after Shabalala’s injury, is the most likely candidate to fill the number 10 role, though Asanele Velebayi and Mfundo Vilakazi are also options.

Before joining Masandawana, Billiat shone for Ajax Cape Town, who later changed their name to Cape Town Spurs. He spent five seasons with the Brazilians, where, apart from winning the league crown, the now 35-year-old was part of the squad that delivered the maiden CAF Champions League trophy.

At Amakhosi, Billiat did not enjoy the success he had yearned for despite spending five years with them.

As a matter of fact, the Soweto giants did not win any major trophy during that period. The management made a decision to part ways with the experienced attacker who wanted improved terms to stay at Naturena.

How Orlando Pirates missed Billiat

During his interview on the Off the Pitch Chat, the Zimbabwe international has now revealed how his proposed move to Bucs didn’t see the light of day.

“So I spent three years at Ajax Cape Town, and in my third year, I returned home to Zimbabwe at the end of the season. And when I returned for the 2013/14 season, I was told that I was at the wrong destination,” Billiat opened up.

“I was told to go to Johannesburg to join Orlando Pirates because the club, Ajax Cape Town, had already agreed to sell me to them. What was left was for me to agree on personal terms, but I said no, because I never wanted to play for Orlando Pirates. I never imagined myself playing for them, maybe because of the experiences I’d heard about former players at the club.

“I wanted to join Mamelodi Sundowns because they wanted me, and I also wanted to play alongside Teko Modise and other stars. That’s how I ended up at Sundowns, but for a moment, a move to Pirates was on the cards.

On Saturday, Masandawana will be hosting Siwelele FC at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, a couple of days after a 1-1 draw with Amakhosi which dented the team’s hopes of defending their title, the Brazilians will be going for nothing less than maximum points.

However, they will have to do without the services of Jayden Adams for the rest of the season after his sending off against Chiefs. This means coach Miguel Cardoso will have to consider either Siphelele Mkhulise or Bathusi Aubaas for the two games remaining.

Amakhosi will face Sekhukhune United on Sunday without their tough-tackling midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu. The 29-year-old received his fourth yellow card of the campaign on Wednesday against Masandawana, meaning he is suspended for the fixture.

Khama Billiat opens up on rumoured R800k salary at Kaizer Chiefs – ‘I was paid well’

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Khama Billiat has lifted the lead on his highly-publicised salary at Naturena.

Billiat joined Chiefs in 2018 after a successful five-year period at Mamelodi Sundowns, signing a three-year contract, and he would stay at the club for five years before leaving in 2023.

The Zimbabwean forward was reported to be the highest paid player in the PSL at the time on a rumoured monthly salary of over R800,000 but it was never known how much he really earned.

While appearing on Off the Pitch Chat, Billiat was put to the spot over how much he took home when he donned the yellow and black of Amakhosi and he gave an interesting response.

“They took care of me and I really appreciate Kaizer Chiefs, they were there for me,” said Billiat. “I am not sure how much others were getting paid but I was paid well and I really appreciate it.”

The former Ajax Cape Town star admitted that he was among a few players who earned a big salary at Chiefs even though he did not confirm or deny the rumoured figure.

“They paid a couple of us very well. I believe Kaizer Chiefs pays everyone very well and I was one of the highest paid at Kaizer Chiefs than a lot of other teams,” he further divulged.

In his five years at Chiefs, there was a feeling that Billiat was not good value for money as he managed 24 goals and 29 assists in 126 games with injuries also keeping him on the sidelines for a number of times in a period when the Soweto giants did not win a trophy.

Billiat had joined the Glamour Boys with a big reputation, having formed part of a potent Sundowns attack that won three PSL titles as well as the 2016 CAF Champions League. He netted 50 goals, weighing in with 43 assists in 146 games for Sundowns.

He returned home to Zimbabwe and signed for Yadah Stars, playing for the club during the 2024-25 season, before joining Scottland FC.

Prominent agent Mike Makaab of Prosport International has commented on the persistent speculation linking Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi with a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs.

Mngqithi’s name has resurfaced as a candidate for the Chiefs job as the club searches for a permanent successor to Nasreddine Nabi, who made a surprise exit from the Naturena-based side in September 2025.

Before his departure, Nabi had ended Chiefs’ decade-long trophy drought by guiding them to the 2025 Nedbank Cup title with a win over rivals Orlando Pirates.

Currently, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze are serving as interim co-coaches. The pair were originally appointed as assistant coaches under Nabi but were promoted to the top job for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign following the Tunisian’s abrupt departure.
