Carling All-Stars: Pirates & Chiefs players dominate squad

Orlando Pirates stars make the bulk of the final Carling All Stars squad that will take on Magesi FC in the Carling Black Label Cup on December 21.

Pirates have nine players in the squad with Kaizer Chiefs producing seven, five from Mamelodi Sundowns with one each from Chippa United and TS Galaxy.

The match will take place at the Orlando Stadium with tickets going for R50 and there is excitement among fans over the tie which will see giant killers Magesi fight for another title, after their fairytale Carling Knockout run ended with a 2-1 victory against Sundowns in the final.

“The All-Star team is a mix of experience and the next generation – with five players coming from Diski sides and the other six from the first teams campaigning in the Premier Soccer League,” reads a media statement.

“Orlando Pirates FC’ goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was the most popular player among champion fans, receiving more than 63,000 votes.

“Chaine leads a starting XI that consists only of players from Orlando Pirates FC, Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Kaizer Chiefs FC.

“He will be part of a starting XI whose back four consists of the Pirates’ pair of Jabulani Mokone and Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Chiefs’ Aiden McCarthy will partner Mbokazi in central defence, with Sundowns’ left-back Asekho Tiwani completing the defence.

“The Sundowns’ pair of Gomolemo Kekana and Bathusi Aubaas will marsh the midfield. Chiefs’ Gaston Sirino and Pirates’ Relebohile Mofokeng will be on the wings. The Chiefs’ pair of Ashley du Preez and Naledi Hlongwane will lead the attack.”

The substitutes are goalkeeper Nqobani Biyela, defenders Dimpho Mdalane, Xolani Cossa, Akhanyisile Sinoti and Reeve Frosler as Mfundo Vilakazi, Sanele Phiri, Simphiwe Selepe, Monnapule Saleng, Thembinkosi Lorch, Patrick Maswanganyi and Tshegofatso Mabasa start on the bench in midfield and attack.
