Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star shares strategy behind ‘quiet’ transfer activity

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Frank Makua has shared his thoughts on the club’s subdued transfer activity as the 2026/27 season approaches, suggesting it may be a deliberate strategy under the new leadership.

The Soweto giants have been uncharacteristically quiet in the market. On Tuesday, they confirmed their third new signing, midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko from Tanzanian club Azam. He joins defender Thabo Moloisane and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner as the only new arrivals at Naturena so far.

This low-key approach to recruitment is concerning for some fans, especially given the significant number of departures. The club has already parted ways with Aden McCarthy, Gaston Sirino, Tashreeq Matthews, George Matlou and Happy Mashiane. More exits could be on the horizon.

Why are Chiefs going slow this window?

Glody Lilepo, a standout performer last season, is reportedly close to a move to Al Ahly Benghazi after not joining the team for their pre-season camp in Spain. Thabo Cele, who also stayed behind, is believed to be seeking a new club.

Speaking to KickOff, Makua proposed that the quiet window is a chance for new head coach Fernando da Cruz to properly assess his inherited squad.

“So far, I think they want to give the players of last season a chance because most of them did not get a chance last season,” Makua explained.

“The new coach is there as well, so he wants to see who he can use in that squad. Maybe later during the course of the season, when the window is open, he will try to beef up wherever he needs to. But for now, I think he’s going to give everyone a chance.”

Makua, affectionately known as ‘Disco’ during his playing days, also highlighted the players he believes must seize this opportunity and make an impact in the upcoming campaign.

“Players like Mfundo Vilakazi will have to step up,” he added. “I was so impressed with (Lebohang) Maboe, and I think he deserved a chance to go to the World Cup but unfortunately… for me, he deserves a chance to be in that national team squad.”

Kaizer Chiefs are set to face Scottland FC in a high-profile pre-season friendly for the Toyota Cup on Sunday afternoon at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
