Kaizer Chiefs edge Orlando Pirates in Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs got their DStv Diski Challenge campaign off to a winning start following a 3-2 victory over defending champions Orlando Pirates at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

In a highly anticipated Soweto Derby, Chiefs made the stronger start and opened the scoring after 30 minutes. Neo Bohloko pounced on a loose ball following a poor clearance before producing an audacious effort from near the halfway line to beat the goalkeeper.

Bohloko doubled his tally before the break after once again taking advantage of a defensive mistake from Pirates. Samkelo Msimango then added a third when he finished off a cutback from Kabelo Nkgwesa, giving Amakhosi a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time.

Pirates’ comeback not enough to beat Chiefs

However, the defending champions responded with greater urgency after the restart and reduced the deficit when Siyabonga Ngwenya converted from a corner, with Chiefs unable to clear the danger inside the box.

Pirates continued to apply pressure and eventually found a second goal from the penalty spot. Lwandile Nzimande calmly picked out the bottom corner after Emile Dortley brought down Ngwenya inside the area.

Chiefs were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Dortley received a second yellow card and was sent off. However, Amakhosi held firm in the closing moments to secure all three points and claim an early victory over their rivals.

Richards Bay claim KZN bragging rights

Elsewhere, Richards Bay FC also enjoyed a winning start, defeating newcomers Milford FC 2-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

Milford endured a difficult introduction to the Diski Challenge, falling behind just five minutes into the match. Luyanda Mthembu finished off a well-delivered cross from Thobani Gumede to put Richards Bay ahead.

The new boys struggled to create meaningful opportunities as Richards Bay remained in control. Their advantage was doubled in the second half when Ayabonga Madida produced an impressive solo finish to seal a comfortable victory for the Stallions.
