Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Thomas Sweswe has lauded Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze for proving to Zimbabwe coach Michael Nees that he deserves to be given opportunities.
Chipezeze is currently basking in the glory of his team’s shock run and victory in the Carling Knockout, when they claimed the trophy, following a surprising 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.
The goalkeeper was crowned man of the match for the fourth straight match in the competition after pulling off a number of top saves that kept his team in the game before they eventually won it.
His performances at the club have, however, not convinced coach Nees to hand him opportunities in the national team with Marumo Gallants’ Washington Arubi preferred in goal instead during The Warriors’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Why is Sweswe happy with Chipezeze?
Sweswe, however, feels it would be a big blunder now to snub the Magesi custodian given what he has done for his club this season.
“Class is permanent. Form is temporary. Elvis Chipezeze reminded Zimbabwe’s national team coach that this guy is also Zimbabwean. Thank you. Maturing in every game. You deserve a place in the national team,” Sweswe posted on social media.
Chipezeze last played for Zimbabwe in December 2020 and has been overlooked since by successive Zimbabwe coaches but Nees will now have a hard time explaining his absence if he keeps snubbing him in their next matches.
Zimbabwe sealed qualification to AFCON 2025 and the Magesi goalkeeper will hope to maintain his top form to force his way into the team that will head to Morocco.
