Kaizer Chiefs fall further behind in PSL title race as Stellenbosch frustrate them

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Stellenbosch on Tuesday night at the FNB Stadium in the Premier Soccer League fixture.

Amakhosi came into the match without their injured key men Lebohang Maboe, Adolf Mtasingwa, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Langelihle Phili, and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

But coach Fernand Da Cruz came up with an interesting starting XI, which included six defenders.

Ex-Chiefs trio Given Msimango, Ashley du Preez and George Matlou were given a chance to face their former employers.

Half of missed chances

The Glamour Boys started the game better and within five minutes they had threatened the Maroons’ goal. Amakhosi were keen on dictating the tempo at home, but their visitors continued pushing whenever they got a chance.

In the 21st minute, Stellies almost took a lead as Sinoxolo Kwayiba beat the defenders, but his rocket came off the upright much to the relief of Chiefs and their supporters.

On the other end, Wandile Duba forced Sage Stephens to a fine save in the 30th minute to send the ball out for a corner ball that bore no fruits.

Despite the chances, the no team managed to break the deadlock in the first half.

The second half’s fireworks

The dangerous Kwayiba evenually found the back of the net in the 47th minute, as he connected Terrence Mashego’s cross past Renaldo Leaner who was starting his second competitive game for the club in a row.

Mduduzi Shabalala was there to respond in favour of Amakhosi in the 58th minute when he showed great composure before finishing off Reeve Frosler’s pass to make it 1-1.

Da Cruz’s men pushed for a winner in the stoppages, but the Maroons stood their ground to take a point. It was Chiefs’ third draw in a row which leaves them nine points behind leaders Sundowns and eight less than second-placed defending champions Orlando Pirates.

On Saturday, Chiefs play Red Arrows in the first leg of the second preliminary in CAF Confederation Cup, as Stellenbosch play Chippa United on October 30.
