Chiefs coach confident club can challenge for national honours

Kaizer Chiefs Under-19 head coach David Mathebula believes his young charges have what it takes to compete for national honours at the upcoming Engen Champ of Champs.

Amakhosi earned their ticket to the prestigious tournament by winning the Gauteng Engen Knockout Challenge in July, securing a place among the top youth sides from across South Africa.

The Engen Champ of Champs tournament, which carries the slogan “Where Diski Legends Start”, will be staged at the University of Pretoria’s High-Performance Centre from 2 to 4 October.

With the tournament fast approaching, Mathebula says excitement is already building within the team. The players have begun discussing the competition at training and are focused on going all the way.

The coach is also relishing the opportunity to measure his side against teams from other provinces, while stressing the importance of representing Gauteng to the best of their ability.

“We are ready and we’re happy that we’re playing the national,” said Mathebula.

“You look at the likes of Antalyaspor JPM CT FC, we’ve seen that they have been doing well. We’ve seen AmaZulu qualify and we believe the other provinces will bring stronger teams as well.

“So, it’s all about testing ourselves against the best in the other provinces. But yeah, we are ready, the boys are ready.”

“You can hear they’re talking about the Engen most of the time when we are training. But we are ready and we believe we’ll continue to prepare very well, and we’ll do well because we’re representing the province.”

Mathebula also said that they don’t want to go there and then have a bad tournament.

“We want to go as far as the final and obviously, as I said, they are playing to win. We want to win the Champ of Champs.”

Chiefs confirm changes to their fixtures

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the first of what could be a pile of fixture changes to their campaign should they again proceed to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Chiefs were due to play Stellenbosch in their next league match on October 17 (15h00) at FNB Stadium.

That match has now been forced to find a new date and will now be played under floodlights on October 13 (19:30) at the same venue. This change — confirmed by Chiefs — has been necessitated by the fact that their opponents for the second qualifying round of the CAF Confederation Cup, Red Arrows, will play their home leg on October 17.

That tie will be played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, meaning instead of flying out to Lusaka, Chiefs will have to cover further distance in heading to the Copperbelt — as Arrows’ home ground in Lusaka, Nkoloma Stadium, doesn’t meet CAF requirements.

Chiefs will then host the second leg on the weekend of October 23/25, before the Carling Knockout first round match on October 27 and the Soweto derby on October 31. If they progress to the Carling Knockout quarterfinals, that match must be played before the start of the November FIFA dates (November 9-17).

Chiefs chasing midfielder

Although the transfer window has slammed shut, with Kaizer Chiefs having signed just five players, the Soweto giants are understood to be keeping an eye on one of their key targets from the window.

Information reaching KickOff indicates that Chiefs remain on alert to potentially landing Lamontville Golden Arrows midfielder Ayabulela Maxwele in future.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder has been a standout performer since his debut for Arrows in March 2025.

Maxwele, who scooped a Man of the Match accolade following his standout performance in the goalless draw against Chiefs, has firmly established his premier division credentials with 47 top-flight caps and three goals to his name.

Both Soweto giants, Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, previously registered concrete interest in the former Mamelodi Sundowns youth player, but an anticipated move failed to materialise.

Primarily comfortable as a central attacking midfielder or a right-back, Maxwele’s versatility makes him an ideal profile to slot into the Glamour Boys’ system.
