Chiefs to miss five against Stellies

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has confirmed that they will be without five key players for their Betway Premiership clash against Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday at FNB Stadium.

The midfield trio of Lebohang Maboe, Adolf Mtasingwa and Siphesihle Ndlovu along with attacker Langelihle Phili and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen remain sidelined with injuries they picked up before the recent international break.

Phili is also nursing an ankle injury that’s kept him out Chiefs’ last four matches and remains a long-term absentee with Ndlovu according to the club. Captain Petersen has according to that statement retuned to individual training after recovering from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, the coach confirmed the players’ absence from the Stellies encounter to reporters on Monday with Mtasingwa an additional name on the list.

“Players not available [on Tuesday]: Maboe, Adolf, Ndlovu, Phili and Petersen,” said Da Cruz.

The injuries to the midfielders have left Da Cruz with few options in the central position, leaving him with Sibongiseni ‘Ox’ Mthethwa as his only available senior option to start. The coach admitted it’s tough, however he has plans for Tuesday.

Amakhosi legend surprised by call to represent Mzansi

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau says he was surprised when he got the call that he would represent Team South Africa at the inaugural Icons Cup.

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau says he was surprised when he got the call that he would represent Team South Africa at the inaugural Icons Cup. Tau, who is now a broadcaster, retired from football in 2013 and has since picked up golf as a newfound passion.

He joins a cohort of retired legends from various sporting codes who will come together for the three-day spectacle.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Tau says it is an honour to be selected to represent the country once again.

“Look, firstly I am very honored and privileged to have been selected; it’s quite a huge honor for me because it came as a surprise, I must say. And you can imagine the shockwaves it sent when I first got the call that I have been selected as one of the players to form part of the Icons Series Team South Africa team, and ja, I am obviously very excited and looking forward to it. A lot of preparation is going on behind closed doors to try and prep for it because it’s quite a serious competition,” said Tau.

Tau says the icons cup call-up mirrors his experience of being called up to Bafana Bafana, whom he represented at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.

“I think there are similarities to it in the sense that you get an opportunity to be called up to represent your country among everybody else who would have loved to have had that opportunity. So that in itself speaks volumes about how serious the tournament is, and if you compare it to the national team.

Why it was easy for Moloisane to adapt

Defender Thabo Moloisane says it was easy for him to adjust to playing for Kaizer Chiefs as he grew up around the team in their development structures.

“I think the first thing, like I said, you look out and you see the guys, you see how much of a big club this is, but for me, what developed the love for me was, because I grew up around here, the only thing that I knew was Kaizer Chiefs and it was an important step for me to actually come into a club where I know this is where I grew up,” Moloisane said.

The defender further stated that he knows what it takes coming into a club where he grew up.

“I know what it would take for me to actually say, hey, I grew up down the road but, at the end of the day, I brought back glory into the team,” the defender added.

“So yeah, I mean, it’s just as important, you know, to not just sign the paper and all that but to love the club first, because when you love the club first, you’ll do your best,” he added.
