Kaizer Chiefs as they break
Ex-Chiefs target wanted life out of Mzansi
Simba SC attacker Keletso Makgalwa has revealed his reasons for picking his current club over Kaizer Chiefs, saying he needed a fresh start outside of South Africa.
Makgalwa, 29, made the transfer to the Tanzanian giants in July this year following an impressive two seasons with former side Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns winger has so far featured five times for Steve Barker’s side, four times in the league and once in the CAF Champions league preliminary rounds where he also has a goal.
“I had offers, I think two or three from AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs, and they were good offers,” Makgalwa opened up to iDiski Times.
“But I felt like I needed a new start in another country and to see how it goes. I think I’ve made the right decision to join Simba, and also, it’s for my family, you know, financially, to help my family.
“It was tough at first making that decision, leaving out Kaizer Chiefs and going to Tanzania. But I spoke to Neo, I spoke to Rushine, and asked them how it is that side, and they were honest. Especially Neo was honest and told me about the environment, the pitches, that side, that it’s not one of the best, but you can make the best out of it.
“And yeah, I made the decision to go there, and for me, in South Africa, as we grow up, our dream was to play for either Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns or [Orlando] Pirates. For me, my dream was to play for Kaizer Chiefs, but that didn’t happen. So, I joined Mamelodi Sundowns, and I fell in love with Sundowns; then I forgot about other teams.
“That’s why I chose to go to Simba. It’s one of those reasons, and it’s not bad. That league is not bad; there are some good players, and there’s Champions League football.
“We have the best players like [Anicet] Oura; he used to play for Stellenbosch, and we have [Gueye] Libasse, and we have so many good players in Tanzania.”
How star overcame epilepsy
Former Kaizer Chiefs Keletso Sifama overcame an epilepsy battle and believes his career can still blossom after going through challenges that could have easily made him quit the game.
Now at Gomora United in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, the 23-year-old striker is on a mission to ressurect a career that looked so promising a few years. He came through at Amakhosi to the first team after playing for the DStv Diski Challenge and was a junior national team.
“It wasn’t an easy journey for me because I had challenges throughout my career. It wasn’t great, but I think one day it will be a great career. I had so many challenges. I was a sick boy. I had seizures, like epilepsy. It played a role in my career. It killed me, but not me being weak in my mind. I kept on pushing and fighting this thing of me getting sick,” Sifama told Soccer Laduma.
“I used to have epileptic (episodes) even in the games, but it’s a thing that healed as a I got older. It happened at Chiefs, and at Pretoria Callies. Even in the national team it happened. It’s something that’s no longer there because it healed. Treatment helped me to be better.
“I don’t want to blame it on me being sick. I think it was a decision they took for me to leave Kaizer Chiefs, but I did not take it badly. I am still in the professional set-up. I can go back if I work hard. I can’t blame it on me being sick,” the former Sekhukhune United striker said.
“Faith and belief keep me going. In everything that you do, do not forget to pray. Everything will happen in the way it should if you believe. Everything should start with you, like how you treat yourself. This (the move to Gomora) is a big thing because there is a platform for me to work and show how good I am.”
