How Orlando Pirates arrive
Pirates are four-time reigning MTN8 champions and have not lost in 25 matches across all competitions. They have conceded just once in their last five games. They beat Durban City 2-1 after extra time in the quarter-final, then knocked out Sekhukhune United 4-0 on aggregate in the semi-final.

They sit one point behind Sundowns in the Betway Premiership with a game in hand, and have the league’s best goal difference (+15 from seven games). Sihle Nduli is still in rehab and Relebohile Mofokeng left for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in July, so more creative responsibility falls on Thalente Mbatha, who says he is ready to start. Evidence Makgopa, Mohau Nkota, Makhehlene Makhaula, Kabelo Dlamini and Andre de Jong are back in training, but their availability is unconfirmed. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has played down the four straight wins, saying the past “will not win Saturday’s match on its own.”
How Mamelodi Sundowns arrive
Sundowns are unbeaten in seven matches and have scored in each of their last five. They lead the Premiership with 20 points from eight games. They beat Polokwane City 3-2 in the quarter-final, then went through against Golden Arrows on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw.

Teboho Mokoena is the major doubt after a knock on Bafana duty and could face a late fitness test. Aubrey Modiba and Bathusi Aubaas are also doubts, though both are trending positive. Monnapule Saleng and Keanu Cupido are back in full training, with Sphelele Mkhulise as cover. Coach Miguel Cardoso says he will not risk anyone who isn’t “genuinely ready.”
Head-to-head
The two sides have met in two MTN8 finals, with one win each. Sundowns won 1-0 in 2007, which remains their only MTN8 title. Pirates won 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw at this same venue in 2023. Saturday’s final decides the series.
Key battle
Oswin Appollis (Pirates) and Brayan Léon (Sundowns) have both started well this season. Appollis has two goals and an assist in seven appearances. Léon has three goals and an assist in seven. Pirates are expected to sit in a mid-block and break through Appollis and Moremi on the flanks. Sundowns should look to control possession and release Saleng or Léon behind the defence, with Mokoena’s passing from deep a huge swing factor if he is fit.
