Mailula stars for Wydad but goalkeeper blunder denies Rulani victory

Cassius Mailula had a starring role for Wydad Athletic Club as they drew 2-2 with AS FAR in the Moroccan league on Thursday.

AS FAR took a fifth minute lead through Mohamed Rabie Hrimat but Wydad fought back to score twice in succession through Mohamed Moufid and Mohamed Rayhi with Mailula providing the assist for their first goal.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star received the ball on the left wing, dribbled past his markers before squaring the ball to Moufid to tap home.

AS FAR kept pressing for an equaliser as Wydad maintained their defensive shape in an effort to walk away with all three points.

However, the plan fell apart when goalkeeper Youssef El Motie gifted the home side the equaliser. El Motie received a back pass but stayed longer on the ball and with AS FAR pressing, Youssef El Fahli robbed him and slotted into an empty net.

The draw denied Rulani Mokwena’s team an opportunity to move to second spot on the table, moving to third on 23 points from 14 matches, seven behind leaders RS Berkane, who have played one game less.

Meanwhile, AS FAR are fifth on 21 points from 13 matches and are struggling to hit the heights of last season when they pushed for the league title and only lost it by one point under coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is now at Kaizer Chiefs.

Mokwena’s team have been improving in their recent matches as they are now unbeaten in six matches although three draws over that period have slowed them down.
