Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso is adamant that his side scored ‘four goals’ against Golden Arrows after Khulumani Ndamane’s effort was controversially ruled out.

Sundowns booked their spot in the MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates with a 3-2 win in the second leg on Sunday.

The Brazilians thought they had scored a second goal after the break when Ndamane turned home from close range, only for the strike to be ruled out for a handball despite replays showing it did not strike the player’s arm.

“It’s not easy here to win 4-2; today we made a fantastic, beautiful result,” Cardoso told SuperSport after the game.

“Four goals scored, so fantastic, fantastic. Anyway, we know what we had to do – the first goal will be very emotionally positive; we knew that we had to circulate the ball a lot until we found the way there, and from there the drop in energy on Arrows will happen.

“Also, we knew the second goal would kill the game, but make it very difficult; the away goals will not be on our side, and we worked on that, of course.

“I think the team deserved, congratulations today, positive mindset, right attitude established, and very good behaviour on the pitch. But then we have to come here again in one week and in the middle – let’s prepare Milford,” he added.

Star ‘didn’t know real score’

Golden Arrows head coach Pitso Dladla has seemingly revealed that few of the players believed the game was not done after scoring their second goal.

Philani Khumalo scored in second-half stoppage time to make it 3-2 on the day and 3-3 on aggregate, with the players running to the corner to celebrate instead of running back to the centre circle.

There was also a look of confusion on some of the players’ faces when the final whistle had gone.

“We did discuss all the permutations before the game; even if you could remember the interview before the game, I was saying we need to treat this game in isolation because we’re anticipating scenarios like this if Sundowns score more than one goal because then the away-goal advantage is with them because we only scored one,” Dladla told SuperSport after the game.

“But when I spoke to him, he did not know the real score of the game; he thought we were leading 3-2, and I said no, it’s 3,-3 meaning that an away goal goes to them.”

The players celebrating the second goal did frustrate Dladla, who knew his side needed to get another goal.

“Because, like I said, we were concentrated on the bench; we knew that we needed another goal after that one, so we were trying to push them. Even those few minutes that we played, we were trying to tell them, let’s have more bodies up front,” he added.

“Let’s go to advanced areas, but I think we can’t falter in anything; it was not meant for us to go through, but the boys did very well.”
