Defending Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns beat Orbit College 2-0 at the Olympia Park Stadium.

Strikes from Miguel Reisinho, who converted Nuno Santos’ assist, before Iqraam Rayners scored the second to ensure the Brazilians completed a double over the relegation-threatened Mswenko Boys.

The win took them to 47 points, three more than Orlando Pirates, who will be in action on Wednesday night against Richards Bay at the Orlando Amstel Stadium.

Despite the crucial victory over the Premier Soccer League debutants, Masandawana will have to play their next Premier Soccer League game, against Durban City without the services of two key players.

Both Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba were cautioned in the game, which was their fourth yellow card. The duo is now suspended for the club’s next league assignment.

Coach Miguel Cardoso can only hope the two positions are not exposed against the Citizensand that the club ends up dropping points, which would benefit Pirates.

Cardoso bemoans ‘dark day’ in Mzansi

Meanwhile, Cardoso is unhappy that Orbit College and PSL refused to postpone their game to give Sundowns time to prepare for the CAF Champions League quarter-final outing against Stade Malien.

“First of all, we are happy we won the match and collected the points. We wanted to score two goals as quickly as possible. I think we started so strong we could have scored very early in the first half,” he told SuperSport TV.

“I think [it is] a little bit of a dark day for football in South Africa. We are not pleased with the situation we were put in; that’s clear. No one in South Africa should have to play a Champions League quarter-final and a league match three days before.

“It’s something South Africa should think about. Everybody should be provided with the conditions to be successful when representing the country at an international level, and we were not rewarded with that pleasure. But we will keep strong and we are going to fight,” Cardoso concluded.
