Thapelo Maseko: Bafana star left home as Sundowns make transfer decision

Winger Thapelo Maseko appears set to leave Mamelodi Sundowns after the club omitted him from their pre-season tour to Austria, effectively giving him the green light to seek opportunities elsewhere.

The 22-year-old recently returned to his parent club following a loan spell with Cypriot side AEL Limassol. The move to Cyprus in January was prompted by a lack of playing time under coach Miguel Cardoso, and Maseko made the most of the opportunity, recording two goals and one assist in 15 appearances.

His strong form earned him a spot in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad for the FIFA World Cup. Maseko played a pivotal role in South Africa’s historic journey to the round of 16, scoring the crucial goal against South Korea that secured their advancement from the group stage before they were knocked out by Canada.

Sundowns open to loan or sale

Despite this impressive resurgence, it is understood that Sundowns are open to either a permanent sale or another loan deal for the winger, according to SABC.

This aligns with the wishes of Maseko’s representatives, as the player has found his opportunities limited since Cardoso took charge in December 2024.

AEL Limassol are reportedly keen on bringing Maseko back on a permanent basis, encouraged by his successful loan stint and his standout performances at the World Cup.

Maseko’s rise, fall and career revival

Maseko first joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in July 2023 under former coach Rulani Mokwena. He made an immediate impact, winning the Player of the Tournament award at the inaugural African Football League.

He was also a member of the Bafana Bafana squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

However, his momentum was halted by a significant injury, and he later expressed his frustration with his limited role at Chloorkop before his career-reviving move to Cyprus. With the transfer window remaining open until late September, Maseko now seems poised for a new chapter away from Sundowns.
