The 37-year-old tactician opens up on his special bond with the Glamour Boys-linked player
Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena has not ruled out the possible signing of midfielder Bongani Zungu.
The 31-year-old ditched Mamelodi Sundowns after the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, a move that caught stakeholders by surprise. Mokwena claimed he was powerless to stop the experienced former Amiens player from leaving.
Zungu has since been heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs; the speculations were fueled after his recent post showed he is in Turkey where Amakhosi are camping ahead of the forthcoming campaign.
Mokwena wants Zungu! ‘He is someone who is special to me!'
The South African has been tasked with helping the Red Castle get back on top of Moroccan football after finishing sixth in the most recent Botola Pro League.
Mokwena now says he can't turn away the chance to sign Zungu, insisting he is just a call away, “I love Bongs; Bongs know me, I know him. It’s easier when you know the coach, the player knows you,” he told Radio2000.
“There is a possibility. It’s not to say that the door is open, the door is closed. He knows, if he doesn’t find anything, he knows my number and he can always contact me. He is someone that is very special to me.”
Mokwena is restructuring Wydad AC, and so far he has confirmed South African coach Sinethemba Badela is with him. He might be adding a few more personnel in his bid to be successful.
“We have not finalised [the technical team], it’s a difficult one because I have accepted a project that everyone is saying to me, where are you going? When you try to convince some of the staff, it becomes difficult because you also don’t want to be bringing people for the sake of bringing in people,” he said in a recent interview.
