Orlando Pirates blow as top striker is ruled out for two months

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa is set for a two-month spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

According to iDiski Times, the club’s medical team has recommended an extended period of rest for the forward to recover from a persistent niggle he carried through the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the team’s pre-season preparations.

While the injury does not require surgery, the towering striker faces a race against time to regain fitness. His absence makes him highly unlikely to be available for South Africa’s upcoming 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Makgopa key part of Pirates’ success

Over the past three seasons, the 26-year-old has been a key figure for the Buccaneers, making 102 appearances, scoring 23 goals, and providing nine assists. His contributions were vital to the club’s success, which includes eight trophies and a domestic treble last season.

In Makgopa’s absence, Yanela Mbuthuma has been leading the line for Pirates, with Boitumelo Radiopane providing backup from the bench.

The squad’s attacking options also include new signing Sebastian Pedersen, who arrived last week, and Sifiso Luthuli.

If he sticks to the two-month schedule, Makgopa will miss at least six games with his possible return date set to be after the international break when Pirates face TS Galaxy on October 18.

Makgopa will miss key matches like the MTN8 semi-final and the start of the Soweto giants’ CAF Champions League campaign in early September.
