In a sign of their imminent return, Pirates also confirmed that Makgopa and Mbatha recently featured in friendly matches as they continue working towards regaining full match fitness.

Meanwhile, midfielder Andre de Jong and winger Mohau Nkota, who rejoined the club while nursing an injury, are progressing well with their rehabilitation.

“Nkota is recovering from a knee injury, while De Jong is undergoing treatment for a hamstring injury. Both players have progressed to field-based rehabilitation,” Pirates further stated.

Which Pirates player is still far from ready?

“Although no timeframe has been confirmed for their return, the move to on-field rehabilitation represents a positive step in their recovery.”

However, midfielder Sihle Nduli, who suffered a ligament tear last season, is still far from a return, although he has completed the latest stage of his rehabilitation programme and begun running on the field.

“Sihle has started running on the field and is scheduled to undergo field-based rehabilitation for approximately two weeks before beginning his reintegration into full-team training,” said Pirates’ senior physiotherapist Kutlwano Molefe.
