Thapelo Maseko: Sundowns reach R28m agreement with European club

Mamelodi Sundowns have reached a club-to-club agreement with Danish side FC Copenhagen for the transfer of winger Thapelo Maseko.

According to iDiski Times, he deal, valued at approximately €1.5 million (R28 million), paves the way for the 22-year-old to continue his career in Europe. Maseko, who had fallen out of favour at Sundowns, successfully revitalised his career during a loan spell with AEL Limassol in Cyprus last season.

His impressive form abroad did not go unnoticed, earning him a call-up to the South African national team. Former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos included Maseko in his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the winger made a significant impact.

Maseko eager to leave for Europe

Maseko started in three of the four matches and scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory against South Korea, a result that secured Bafana Bafana’s historic first-ever progression to the knockout stages of the tournament.

Despite his World Cup heroics, Maseko remained outside of the plans at Sundowns, prompting the club to seek a permanent move for him.

Copenhagen, the former club of South African legend Sibusiso Zuma, emerged as the frontrunner and has now secured an agreement with the CAF Champions League holders.

While personal terms are still to be finalised, they are not expected to be an obstacle, as Maseko is reportedly eager to make a permanent switch to European football.
