Sundowns vs Polokwane City: Preview, line-ups, venue & where to watch

Published on by Nkosiyabuya Sithole

Mamelodi Sundowns are out to seek revenge against the minnows Polokwane City who stunned them last week in the Betway Premiership game.

With Orlando Pirates posing a significant challenge in the league this season, Sundowns are keen to avoid further point losses as they aim to establish a winning momentum.

On the other hand, the Rise and Shine have emerged as potential dark horses this season, having commenced their campaign with impressive performances that have taken many by surprise.

Head-to-head

Sundowns have consistently dominated this clash over the years; however, City has demonstrated that they are not an easy opponent for the Tshwane giants.

In their last ten encounters, Polokwane has secured three victories, while Sundowns has emerged victorious in four matches. The remaining contests concluded in draws.

This season, the two teams have faced each other on two occasions. Sundowns achieved a hard-fought victory in extra time during the MTN8 quarterfinal, aided by an own goal from Thabang Matuludi.

Polokwane claimed victory in the league match just last week, with Bulelani Nikani netting the decisive goal in the closing moments.

Form guide

Masandawana will come to this match with their tails up after beating arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinal at the FNB Stadium.

Before then, they had brushed aside Cape Town City with a 3-0 scoreline at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday which was their rebound from a defeat at the hands of the Phuti Mohafe’s side.

Polokwane City, currently third in the league standings, have enjoyed a strong start to the season, winning their last two matches against Sundowns and Royal AM.
