Bafana Bafana: Williams lifts lid on Mosimane’s winning strategy

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has lauded his teammates for their seamless adaptation to life under returning head coach Pitso Mosimane as South Africa prepare for their next 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture.

Mosimane stepped back into the national team hot seat following the exit of Belgian tactician Hugo Broos, who had spent five years restoring confidence and structure to the side.

Despite having minimal time to implement his philosophy, the coach affectionately known as “Jingles” guided Bafana to an opening 2-1 victory against Guinea at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

With a crucial Group D clash against Eritrea in Cairo looming on Wednesday, Williams shed light on the positive atmosphere in camp and the squad’s reception of Mosimane’s tactical tweaks.

“Obviously there has been a change in the technical team, but the coach is very experienced. He knows we can’t alter everything in such a short window,” Williams explained.

“He has given us specific details where we can refine our play to suit his vision. You can only do so much with limited time, but it has been fantastic. The camp has been smooth, and the energy and team spirit remain exceptionally strong.”

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper pointed out that the team’s buy-in was clearly reflected during their campaign-opening win.

“The players have been completely receptive to the changes he has introduced, which showed in the tactical discipline we maintained during the last match,” Williams added. “Seeing elements from the training pitch translate into the game demonstrates our trust in what the coach is giving us.”

“It has been a positive start, but another test awaits us. Our focus is firmly on securing all three points and delivering another solid performance.”

South Africa face a high-stakes qualifying campaign due to the unique composition of Group D. Kenya, coached by former Bafana striker Benni McCarthy, are guaranteed qualification as 2027 co-hosts alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

As a result, only the highest-finishing side among South Africa, Guinea, and Eritrea will earn the remaining ticket to the continental showpiece.

South Africa lead the standings with three points from their opening fixture, followed by Kenya and Eritrea on one point apiece, with Guinea yet to get off the mark.
