Nigeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals in emphatic fashion, dismantling Mozambique 4-0 at Fez Stadium on Monday night.
The Super Eagles delivered a statement performance that underlines their status as one of the tournament’s top contenders.
Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams were the creative engines, each contributing a goal and two assists, while Victor Osimhen stole the spotlight with a clinical brace. It was a masterclass in attacking football from the West Africans.
For Mozambique, simply reaching the knockout stage for the first time was a historic achievement. But against a side brimming with talent and experience, the Mambas were outclassed.
Super Eagles Take Flight Early
Nigeria dominated possession from the outset, with Osimhen having an early strike ruled out for offside and Alex Iwobi forcing a sharp save from Ernan Siluane. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Lookman swept home a low cross from Adams.
Five minutes later, Lookman turned provider, swinging in a cross that deflected off Adams and fell perfectly for Osimhen to tap in for 2-0. Mozambique’s only real chance of the first half was a glancing header from Faisal Bangal that drifted wide.
Osimhen and Adams Seal the Rout
Mozambique made changes at halftime, but Nigeria struck again within two minutes of the restart. Lookman’s low delivery from the byline found Osimhen for his second goal of the night.
Adams capped off the performance in the 75th minute, drilling home a powerful shot after a neat pass from Lookman to complete the 4-0 scoreline.
The Super Eagles now await Algeria or DR Congo in the quarterfinals at Marrakesh Stadium on Saturday, January 10.
