Legendary Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has urged Uganda to go for nothing less than a win on Friday against South Africa in Group K's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
It will be a tough assignment for the pool leaders who have never beaten Bafana Bafana in their last six meetings across all competitions.
The East Africans lost both legs in the 2006 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, a loss and a draw in two friendlies played. Another meeting was in the Cosafa Cup where spoils were shared while the latest meeting was in September in the first outing of the qualifiers between the sides that ended 2-2.
Both South Africa and Uganda have qualified for the biennial competition that will be held in Morocco, but the top position in the group is still up for grabs.
Go for three points to get one! Onyango advises Cranes
“The only advice I can give the boys is to fight for three points,” the 39-year-old Uganda legend said as quoted by the Daily Monitor.
“You always fight for three points. If the three points don't come, you get one point, which is also good for us. The boys should not to panic, just play their usual game at Namboole and try to get the best out of each other for the best for the country because it's a very big opportunity for them.
“So it's a very good thing for the Cranes to get three points at Namboole, but they must give a good fight because they're playing a very good team. It's a very difficult game for both countries, but mostly I think it's more difficult for Uganda because they're playing at home, they are under pressure.
“Three points will make it even better and sweeter because when it's time for seeding during Afcon, Uganda could qualify as a top seed, which would put them in the pot with some of the best countries,” Onyango concluded.
The Friday match will be played from 15.00hrs South African Time.
