Al Ahli star concedes ‘best in Africa’ Sundowns just too good

Al Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy offered high praise for Mamelodi Sundowns following their clash in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, despite his team’s narrow defeat.

The South African champions secured a 2-1 victory at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, thanks to a double from Nuno Santos. Although disappointed with the result, the former Chelsea star acknowledged the quality of the opposition.

Speaking after the match, Mendy expressed his frustration but also his pride in Al Ahli’s performance.

“A lot of disappointment. I think we played a great game, but a final is about details, set-pieces, and focus. Up front, I think we could have killed the game in the first half. It is what it is. I’m proud of my team,” he said.

The Senegalese international was particularly impressed by Sundowns, hailing them as the continent’s top side and one of the most formidable opponents he has ever encountered.

“I think we showed good character and spirit here in South Africa against the best team in Africa, definitely. One of the best teams I ever played,” Mendy stated. “They have a lot of quality, but we came here and we showed our quality in our football.”

Mendy rues missed opportunity

Reflecting on the tight contest, he added, “It was 50-50, and it went their way. Congrats to them. We’re going to rest and focus on the second phase of the season.”

Al Ahli will return to their Saudi Pro League campaign against Al Fateh after the international break. Mendy, having retired from international duty, will not be joining the Senegal squad.

Meanwhile, Sundowns players will head to international duty with 12 making coach Pitso Mosimane’s final squad.
