Bafana superfan Mama Joy breaks silence after missing Angola game

Bafana Bafana superfan Mama Joy has broken her silence following her absence during South Africa’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations opening match against Angola.

Mama Joy was missing from the stands at the Marrakech Stadium as Hugo Broos’ team started their campaign with a 2-1 win over the Palancas Negras, a rare occurrence during her many years of supporting Bafana Bafana.

However, the superfan has now revealed that she is on her way to Morocco to support the team will arrive in time for Friday’s clash against Egypt in Agadir after attending to family matters.

Superfans lost state funding

“Morocco am coming I have done my family duties now SA duties flying the flag. Yess,” she posted on her X account.

The former Orlando Pirates and Royal AM supporter was in great spirits she travelled to Morocco on Wednesday and will light up the stands at the 45,480-seater Stade Adrar on Boxing Day when Bafana Bafana take on the seven-time African champions.

Mama Joy, real name Joy Chauke, is among superfans who saw their funding from the government stopped by Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie in July 2024, saying he did not see the reason to justify such spending when the real actors, players and artistes were not receiving enough.

What is at stake in Agadir?

Her presence will, however, be an added advantage as South Africa look to make it two wins out of two at AFCON 2025.

South Africa face a daunting task against an Egypt side whose star players Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush rose to the occasion against Zimbabwe to help them to a 2-1 win.

The winner of the match between South Africa and Egypt will therefore seal a place in the knockout round and this is where Broos wants his side to be.
