Betway Premiership Saturday Wrap: Sekhukhune Held Again as AmaZulu End Siwelele’s Unbeaten Run

Published on by

Sekhukhune United’s search for a first win in five matches continued on Saturday after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Marumo Gallants at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Eric Tinkler’s men looked poised to break their winless streak when substitute Ngoanamello Rammala struck just a minute into the second half, having been introduced during the break. But Gallants hit back in the 65th minute through Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, who latched onto Katlego Otladisa’s pass and calmly slotted home from inside the box.

The result saw Babina Noko climb to fourth place on the Betway Premiership table, edging Kaizer Chiefs on goal difference, but they missed the chance to go second with Orlando Pirates also locked on 22 points.

Sekhukhune had the best chance of the first half when Vuyo Letlapa headed narrowly wide from Keletso Makgalwa’s cross. Ndlondlo almost snatched victory for Gallants late on, but failed to convert after racing onto Bheki Mabuza’s flick-on.

In Durban, AmaZulu FC ended Siwelele FC’s four-match unbeaten run with a 2-0 victory at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, courtesy of a brace from Athini Maqokolo.

Usuthu have now won three of their last four league games, climbing to fifth place with 21 points from 12 matches. Siwelele remain 10th on 13 points and continue to struggle in front of goal, they have scored just seven times this season and failed to find the net in nine matches across all competitions.

The visitors dominated early possession but lacked penetration, with AmaZulu goalkeeper Darren Johnson barely tested. The breakthrough came on the stroke of halftime when Hendrick Ekstein released Maqokolo, who lobbed Ricardo Goss for 1-0.

The second goal arrived in the 73rd minute after sloppy play from Siwelele allowed Maqokolo to pounce and fire home for 2-0. AmaZulu could have added a third soon after, but Nkosikhona Radebe squandered a golden chance.
