Kaizer Chiefs have been eliminated from the Carling Knockout after a heavy 4-0 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium.
Amakhosi had come into the match hoping to get a positive result to make the Carling Knockout semi-final and avenge the initial 2-1 loss at the same venue in the Premier Soccer League.
However, the Brazilians were keen on proving they still had the edge to convincingly silence the Soweto Giants and avoid a defeat in 10 consecutive games between the sides.
Rayners and Shalulile silence Khosi nation
As expected, Sundowns started the match on a high despite the pressure from the home team and cheers from the lively supporters.
Iqraam Rayners came close to opening the scoring after just five minutes, but his deflected effort was deflected for a corner kick via the woodwork.
Nevertheless, eight minutes later, a careless play by Samkelo Zwane allowed Lucas Ribeiro to get possession in the danger zone. Njabulo Blom tried to win a tackle against the South American but it ended up being a foul and Rayners scored from the spot to make it 1-0.
The former Stellenbosch striker then made it two in the 21st minute; poor marking ended with Khuliso Mudau getting the ball on the right wing. In his bid to stop the cross, Bradley Cross managed to set up the Bafana international who held his nerves before beating Fiacre Ntwari to get his brace.
It got ugly for the Glamour Boys in the 40th minute when Aubrey Modiba found Peter Shalulile who guided the ball past advancing Ntwari to make it 3-0. Shalulile could have added Downs' fourth late in the first half but his effort came off the crossbar as Masandawana ended the first stanza with a total of 13 shots while Chiefs had just three.
It gets worse for Chiefs
Sundowns were not ready to slow down after the break as they pushed for more goals in the competition.
In the 56th minute, Amakhosi were reduced to 10 men after Inacio Miguel was sent off for the second bookable offense. In the first half, he had hurled down Ribeiro before repeating the same mistake against Shalulile.
Mudau scored Masandawana's fourth in the 60th minute after being beautifully set up by Ribeiro.
It could have been worse for Amakhosi but Ntwari pulled up some good saves to ensure the scoreline remained respectable.
Amakhosi are now remaining with the PSL and Nedbank Cup to end their nine-season trophy drought.
Sudowns join Richards Bay in Carling semis
Elsewhere, Richards Bay beat Cape Town City 5-4 on penalties after a goalless stalemate in a Carling Knockout quarterfinal match at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Therefore, the Natal Rich Boys advanced to the league cup semifinals for the first time in the club's history and they will travel to Gauteng where they are scheduled to take on Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership clash on Tuesday.
