South African forward Cassius Mailula is enjoying a career revival at Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club after his great performances earned him the Player of the Month award for January.
Mailula, who is at Wydad on a season-long loan deal from MLS club FC Toronto, has been one of the leading lights for the Rulani Mokwena-coached side and scored one goal and provided an assist in January as the Moroccan giants won three straight league matches last month.
It was not just his goals but his overall work rate that won over the Wydad fans who overwhelmingly voted for him for the monthly award.
The vote of confidence is just what Mailula needs after putting behind his nightmare spell at Toronto, where he struggled for game time, and he is glad to be working under Mokwena, a coach who knows him so well after their spell together at Mamelodi Sundowns.
How has ‘Cash’ performed at Wydad?
Overall, Mailula has played 20 matches in all competitions for Wydad and scored two goals while providing five assists this season with Mokwena’s team experiencing some inconsistencies before their three-match winning run in January.

Mailula’s form is reported to have impressed the Wydad hierarchy which is keen to tie him down permanently when his loan spell expires at the end of the season.
He is also hitting form at the right time, putting him in contention for a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations later in the year.
Wydad, who are fourth on the table, return to league action at home to Hassania on Sunday February 9 when Mailula will be hoping to continue his fine run while Thembinkosi Lorch look to make his debut after arriving last week from Mamelodi Sundowns.
