South African forward Cassius Mailula was among the scorers as Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic club secured a 5-1 victory away to Chabab Mohammedia in the Moroccan league on Sunday.
It was a good day at the office for Mokwena’s men as they scored five for the second time this season, while making it five straight wins, which took them to second place in the Botola Pro League.
Mailula broke the deadlock after 33 minutes when he headed in Zakaria Nassik’s cross for a 1-0 halftime lead and Wydad’s task was made easier just after the second half started, when Mohammedia were reduced to 10 men, following a second yellow card to Mohammad Malik.
Wydad had a chance to extend their lead via the penalty spot but Mohamed Rayhimi missed his initial kick before then scoring from the rebound for 2-0 but the home side pulled one back eight minutes later.
How did Wydad secure the thumping win?
That is how it stayed for large parts of the second half with Mokwena making five changes after, including the inclusion of Thembinkosi Lorch in the 77th minute, and it looked like the match would end 2-1 in favour of Wydad before the floodgates opened late.
An own goal from Walid Sani four minutes from time increased Wydad’s lead before Samuel Obeng added the fourth in the 89th minute and in time added on, Mickael Malsa completed the rout.
It was a complete performance for the Moroccan giants, who have now moved to second on the log on 39 points, a spot they need to maintain as it comes with the incentive of CAF Champions League qualification.
Mailula continues to shine for Wydad and has now scored three goals, provided five assists and was voted the club’s Player of the Month for January.
