Kaizer Chiefs cult hero makes UEFA Champions League history

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy made history in the UEFA Champions League when his Azerbaijani club Sabah FK won their first-ever match in the competition.

Sabah FK are competing in the prestigious European competition for the first time in their history and after opening their campaign with a 4-0 loss to Manchester United in September, they were a different beast on Tuesday.

The Azerbaijan champions stunned Czech giants Slavia Prague, beating them 2-0, for their first-ever victory in European’s premier club competition.

Sabah FK make Champions League history

Kaheem Parris, who had a first-half goal ruled out for offside, latched onto Ivan Lepinjica’s cutback before sweeping home the opener from the edge of the box in the 49^th minute.

The home side had to wait until the 88^th minute for the second goal which was scored in bizarre fashion by Lance Mickels. Slavia goal keeper Jakub Markovic came out of his goal and miscontrolled before Mickels had a weak shot from distance.

Just like he did during his Champions League debut at Old Trafford, McCarthy played 90 minutes for Sabah and was given a rating of 6.5 by Flashscore.

How did ex-Kaizer Chiefs star perform?

Sabah will turn their attention to a league clash away to Gabala on Saturday before a daunting Champions League trip to German giants Borussia Dortmund next Tuesday.
