Chiefs legend hails Sirino: ‘That’s how number 10 plays’

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Abel Shongwe has showered praise on the club’s new signing Gaston Sirino following his impressive display against Marumo Gallants.

Sirino, who joined Chiefs as a free agent after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns, gave Amakhosi faithful hope, leaving everything on the pitch during their Betway Premiership opener.

He played a major role in helping the Phefeni Glamour Boys pick up a 2-1 victory over Bahlabane Ba Ntwa in front of a sold out crowd at the Free State Toyota Stadium.

Despite having struggled for playing time at his previous club in the last season, he was able to play 90 minutes in his first game in the famous Gold and Black shirt.

Shongwe says Sirino will do better than other former Sundowns players who have played for Chiefs like Khama Billiat, Leonardo Castro and Keagan Dolly.

He believes the one game that the 33-year-old has played shows enough signs that he will be a big boost for Nasreddine Nabi’s side.

CHIEFS LEGEND ON SIRINO – ‘YES IT WAS FIRST GAME BUT…’

“The boy did exceptionally well. Coming from [Mamelodi] Sundowns, joining Chiefs and showing some good touches was impressive compared to the other players we had before, coming from Sundowns,” Shongwe told KickOff.

“Those Sundowns players never gave Chiefs anything. Yes, it was a first game, but they always say first impressions last. If he can keep on with the same work rate he showed that weekend, I think Sirino is going far.

“Sirino's performance proved he is here to work. As a foreigner, he proved he didn't come to Kaizer Chiefs to add numbers, he came here to compete.

“The number 10 jersey suits him perfectly, that's how a jersey number 10 should play. It's not easy to handle the jersey number 10 when you don't belong in that category.”
