‘Sundowns turning into new Chiefs, Pirates must take advantage’ – Mzansi on Mngqithi’s sacking

Published on by Joel Oliver

Mamelodi Sundowns’ appointment of Miguel Cardoso as the new coach has been met with mixed reactions from fans in South Africa.

Sundowns sacked Manqoba Mngqithi just halfway into the season having been made head coach at the end of last term with Portuguese tactician Cardoso taking over the hot seat as the Brazilians look to improve their fortunes.

That decision has, however, left fans divided with some feeling the club is now headed the way of Kaizer Chiefs, handing Orlando Pirates an advantage while some are skeptical over a foreign coach given the success of South African tacticians Pitso Mosimane and Rulani Mokwena at the club.

How has Mzansi reacted to the Mngqithi’s sacking and Cardoso’s appointment?

Sundowns will regret this decision

There was just no need. Terrible decision, we will live to regret. This could be the end of dominance by Sundowns. I hate these so-called int [international] coaches. Maqoba was doing well

Nabi will get Cardoso sacked

This is Sundowns l like. Going in circles, sacking coach after coach Football is returning. [Nasreddine] Nabi will get this one sacked. They will be searching for a coach at the end of the season again – @KB_Ramasimong

Foreign coaches don’t perform at Sundowns

In the history of Mamelodi Sundowns, we know what foreign coaches do in that team…they win nothing. Foreign coaches were found wanting before at botho, bo Neeskens etc after [Ptruce] Motsepe took over, time will tell this time. – @Thabang94527261

Mngqithi’s pride got him sacked

It was about time, the other guy got too full of himself. He thought he was Jose [Mourinho] or Pep [Guardiola], began to be arrogant, forgetting that he was coaching a team with great quality, now makayoqala phantsi njezinye izingane but humble this time. -@NdllovuD

Manqoba fired himself by not being bold enough, a team like @Masandawana need strong leadership, someone who takes hard decisions, he trusted wrong players who we all saw didn’t buy into his vision. But he will learn. – @ThamsanqaGamede

I'm no Sundowns supporter but I'm glad Manqoba got the axe! Right after Rulani [Mokwena]; his first press conference he started by talking about “we will attack more than just holding the ball for the sake of holding the ball.” I knew it then that he was down-talking Rulani-ball… – @ern_music

Hard to feel bad for Manqoba because he had a lot to say in his short stint at Sundowns. Pride is bad. -@ntozmalusi

The title is Pirates’ to lose

It's official, Buccaneers, we're winning the league. I used to pray for times like these. Sundowns is about to enter the “Chiefs' Nabi era”. Pirates must capitalise on this moment. – @AHJ20231208

Cardoso not better than Rulani

I am actually annoyed by all this chopping and changing… We went for eight years with Pitso [Mosimane] at the Helm…. another four years with the co-coaching with Rulani and then recently with MM [Manqoba Mngqithi]… I'm really questioning Flemming Berg's leadership.

-@Mupper77

This guy looks familiar but at this point as long as it's not Rhulani we'll take on whoever they put in that position. I don't think we'll ever see another football team as scary as Rhulani's Sundowns.

We welcome this appointment, it was long overdue… our former coach Manqoba was given a fair chance and he failed dismally against minnows. Rhulani was way better than him, if Cardoso also fails, we must bring back Mlungisi. -@ThabangLikotsi2

Why was Benni snubbed?

Benni [McCarthy] would've been a perfect replacement, but hey we'll keep supporting the team.

Manqoba deserved some time

As a Mamelodi Sundowns supporter, I don't support this decision. Manqoba Mngqithi did nothing wrong to deserve this. Rhulani Mokoena won none of the cups that coach Mngqithi failed to win, yet he had an entire season. Flemming Berg is bad for Sundowns, local coaches & players.
