Mozambique captain Elias Pelembe, popularly known as Dominguez, has announced his retirement from international football after making history at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025).
The 42-year-old veteran became the oldest outfield player in AFCON history earlier this week when he started Mozambique’s Round of 16 clash against Nigeria in Fes, Morocco. Despite his milestone, the Mambas suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to the Super Eagles, ending their tournament run.
Dominguez, who enjoyed a stellar club career with SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Bidvest Wits, bows out after 20 years of service to Mozambique. He previously featured in the 2010 AFCON finals in Angola and leaves as one of the nation’s most iconic players. At 42 years, one month, and 24 days, he ranks second only to Egypt’s legendary goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary as the oldest player in AFCON history.
It remains unclear whether Pelembe will continue playing for UD Songo in the Mozambican league, which kicks off next month.
Other Mozambique Stars Also Retire
Dominguez’s announcement follows similar decisions by teammates Mexer (37) and Reinildo Mandava (31), who confirmed their international retirements after the Nigeria defeat. Reinildo, now at Premier League side Sunderland, said:
“This was my last game, my last campaign. Now it’s time to give strength to the younger players.”
Mexer, a former Ligue 1 defender, added:
“Reinildo, Dominguez and I are leaving, but the national team continues. Always run for each other, even if you have disagreements off the field.”
Coach Pays Tribute
Mozambique coach Chiquinho Conde praised the trio’s contribution:
“Everything I know as a coach I learned from you. You have always been worthy of representing the nation. To the younger generation, hold onto this legacy.”
Gabadinho Mhango, a former teammate, recently described Pelembe as a true professional who continues to defy the odds and prove that age is just a number.
“In Africa, as long as you hit 30, you are old and in Europe when you reach 30, now you become a footballer. You become more experienced and all. I think age is just a number. Pelembe is 40 but he has a body of a guy who is 16 years old,” added the former Golden Arrows, Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates striker.
