Former VfL Bochum winger Delron Buckley has opened up on being snubbed bu South Africa's ‘Big Three' clubs upon his return from a successful European career.
Buckley spent nearly two decades in Germany, showcasing his talents for clubs like Bochum, Borussia Dortmund, and Mainz.
During his time in Germany, Buckley was one of the main key players for Bafana Bafana, however, the national team wasn’t doing well unfortunately. Buckley represented South Africa 73 times.
He returned to his homeland in 2012, joining Maritzburg United (now known as Durban City).
He spent two years with the club as a player and subsequently transitioned into an assistant coaching role.
Buckley revealed that he was open to signing for any of the three big clubs but they were all not interested in his services saying he was old.
‘I WAS TOLD I’M TOO OLD’
“If I tell you, you can probably get a shock,” Buckley told iDiski Times.
“Because I actually wanted to play for those teams when I wanted to come back. I actually wanted to finish off my career either by Pirates, Chiefs or Sundowns, but apparently, I was told that I’m too old to play.
“When I came back, I was 35. So, I was told, ‘Nah, he’s too old and he won’t cope with the league’ and this and that. So, this is how I ended up in Maritzburg. And then in the first season of my 35-year-old season, I was four times the Man of the Match.”
