Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star pinpoints Bafana’s main weaknesses ahead of World Cup

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Jabu Mahlangu has identified two critical areas for Bafana Bafana to improve upon ahead of the upcoming World Cup, following their recent friendly matches against Panama.

South Africa concluded their two-game series against the Central American nation with a 2-1 defeat at DHL Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday. This followed a 1-1 draw in the first encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last Friday.

In the second match, Panama took the lead in the second half through Jose Cordoba after a cagey opening 45 minutes. Mbekezeli Mbokazi found an equaliser for South Africa, but their efforts were undone when Jiovany Ramos scored the winner for the visitors with just 15 minutes remaining.

Speaking on SABC Sport, Mahlangu pinpointed the specific weaknesses that need immediate attention before the global tournament kicks off in June.

Ex-Chiefs star on Bafana’s areas of concern

“I think the first game was disappointing because of the chances that were created,” Mahlangu stated as per KickOff. “On Tuesday, we could not create even four clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities, as we did on Friday. So, the lesson is to be clinical.”

The former midfielder also expressed concern over the team’s defensive frailties, particularly from dead-ball situations.

“Also, the way we conceded through set plays, the corner kicks. I think we had a problem there. We didn’t handle that well,” he added. “So, I think we need to be clinical, and we need to improve when it comes to defending set plays.”

Coach Hugo Broos is expected to name a squad of up to 26 players for the World Cup. He has also indicated a desire for at least one more friendly match before South Africa’s tournament opener against Mexico on June 11.
