‘My Rottweiler can coach with a cheque book’ – Why ex-Pirates coach does not rate ‘Big Three’

Former Orlando Pirates coach Roger de Sa does not believe that the top three teams have better coaches in the PSL.

Mamelodi Sundowns have Miguel Cardoso, Kaizer Chiefs with Nasreddine Nabi and Pirates under Jose Riveiro have experienced mixed fortunes this season with the Brazilians and Buccaneers joint top in the PSL.

From the three, Cardoso and Nabi arrived with a big reputation after their jobs previously on the continent while Riveiro has proved his mettle with five trophies in two-and-a-half seasons even though he was not highly-rated when he arrived in 2022.

However, De Sa does not believe the three foreign coaches are better than a number of local tacticians in the league and feels they are only helped by the money their clubs are able to spend on top players.

“We haven’t had a foreign coach win the league for a long time. Hey, I will leave at that,” De Sa told Soccer Laduma.

“I value a guy like Steve Barker who has done exceptionally well. The Polokwane City coach (Phuti Mohafe) has done exceptional work. He’s got a team of nobodies in the top three. Chippa United have had a good run. That is coaching for me.

“That is real coaching. Anyone can coach with a cheque book. My Rottweiler can coach with a cheque book. Those are the ones I respect and admire. Those are the guys who are coaching in the true sense of the word.”

Commenting on the title race which has both Sundowns and Pirates tied on 21 points from eight games, De Sa expressed a desire to see competitive race and not one team claiming it with many matches to go.

“As good as Sundowns were, we don’t want that. It was good for Sundowns but it is not an ideal scenario when you have one team running away 20 points clear,” he added.

“You want that fight where every game becomes important. That is good for the game. Just got to get Chiefs challenging as well.”
