‘Football can be a short career, emulate Chiefs’ Khune!’

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe has challenged Premier Soccer League players to consider investing in a sustainable investment like Itumeleng Khune.

The Glamour Boys legend parted ways with the club after the end of the 2023/24 season. The 37-year-old wanted to continue playing but the Soweto giants felt he will not add any value to the squad owing to his age.

He has since ventured into sports betting company TopBet as a brand ambassador. Khune feels other players who are close to retiring should borrow a leaf and do something that will help them sustain themselves in the future.

“I’m very happy with what Khune is doing with his life after football,” the 62-year-old said as quoted by FarPost.

“If it’s sustaining him and his family, it’s a good thing for him. At the moment, he’s the only one who knows about his future, whether he will continue playing football or retire.

“Current PSL players should follow Khune and invest in businesses that will sustain them and their families in the event that they are not playing football. For me, that’s a good example, and I think players should look into that; it will help them in future.

“One thing for sure, football can be a very short career. Planning and investing is very important whilst you are still playing and earning.”

Apart from the betting venture, Khune has also taken a role as a SABC Sports analyst. however, he has not publicly announced his retirement from football.
