Former Chiefs attacker in trouble after being arrested with drugs valued at R1,3M

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Brian Abbas Amidu has been arrested and arraigned for alleged drug trafficking.

The former Zimbabwe international was nabbed by the police along the Kwekwe-Kadoma Highway with his accomplice Reuben Kudzai Mhalanga. The two have been judged for having the illegal substance valued at around R1,3 million by the authorities.

Interestingly, the authorities say he is aged 29, which shouldn't be the case since he had been registered as a 21-year-old when the Glamour Boys unveiled him in 2012, but his stint with Amakhosi lasted just three months.

Police confirm Amidu's arrest

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of soccer players, Tumai Matsika, also known as Abas Amidu ,(29) and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41) for drug trafficking,” the Police posted on their official X account.

“The two were found in possession of 750kg of dagga valued at USD75 000-00 in a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle, registration number AGP 6776, along Kwekwe – Kadoma Highway on 03/10/25. Meanwhile, the ZRP arrested Prosper Mphofu (48) at Trabablas Interchange after receiving a parcel containing 60kg of dagga worth USD6 000-00 from a certain vehicle,” they concluded.

The duo will remain in custody a prosecution prepares evidence against them before the trial.

Amidu's football journey

After leaving Chiefs, Amidu joined Black Leopards, a team he served for three years before securing a move to Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and eventually Saudi Arabia.

In his native country, Amidu played for CAPS United and represented the Warriors seven times.

According to IOL, the police claim this is not an isolated case, “Amidu has used multiple aliases and has pending cases in Epworth and Harare under different identities, a tactic investigators say was intended to evade detection.”
