The ex-Stellenbosch striker has addressed the criminal allegations leveled against him
Mamelodi Sundowns new signing Iqraam Rayners has addressed claims of physical assault labelled against him by a Stellenbosch activist.
Rayners was dragged into the criminal incident as he was in the process of finalising his transfer from Stellenbosch FC to Sundowns when the activist claimed he hit him with a whisky glass following a bar brawl, the incident leaving his face disfigured.
The claims did not hamper Rayners’ transfer to Sundowns, however, and the player has now responded to them, saying he is not happy at how it came out and that both parties are trying to find a solution.
What has Iqraam Rayners said over the incident?
“I was disappointed with what the guy did, going to social media was wrong for my name, people thinking this and that,” Rayners said during his first interview with Sundowns.
“It is in the courts now so next week we will have mediation; we will sit around the table with my lawyer, the people from court and the guy. Next week we will probably solve the problem so everything will be good after that.”
Eon Hendricks, a Stellenbosch community activist, made the sensational claims, saying he was disappointed in the behaviour of the player, whom the community held in high regard.
The striker is accused of causing bodily harm
“I was like a fan, I was so happy to see him because I had just read in the morning about his possible transfer to Mamelodi Sundowns. The first thing that came to mind is to start a conversation based on what I read,” the activist claimed early this month.
“I didn’t get the response that I expected to get, he was very angry towards me at that moment and he left the toilet and when I got outside, I felt a knock on my face which he hit me with a whisky glass in my face and I went down and realised I’m bleeding.
“I could feel people kicking me and people trying to get hold of me until I managed to escape and managed to run into a room in Central where I was treated and taken to the hospital.”
