How ‘smart’ Orlando Pirates attacker Relebohile Mofokeng beats defenders

Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng has been doing quite well for both the club and Bafana Bafana.

The 21-year-old made his Bucs debut late in the 2022/23 campaign under the then coach Jose Riveiro. The South Africa attacker has since played more than 100 games across all competitions for the Soweto giants with a return of 19 goals and 25 assists which have seen the team win seven major trophies.

The versatile attacker has been tipped to leave the Sea Robbers for greener pastures in the future as top teams are constantly being linked to him.

This is happening for Mofokeng despite his smaller frame, as opposed to the players he plays against or even his colleagues. Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Joseph Molangoane has explained why Mofokeng is flourishing.

Why is Mofokeng delivering despite his smaller frame?

“Players with small frames know how to be smart, a great example is Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng],” he said in his recent interview with FARPost.

“Rele knows that his body does not allow him to go into too many duels. So most of the time, he has to get away from the defenders. He always has to have the ball when he is alone in space.

“Then he goes into the one-on-one with the ball at his feet. This comes with understanding the game. Most players with smaller sizes are forced to understand the game very well. It can be very simple. You just don’t make contact with bigger players. Great pace is key. You must be able to dodge. Knowing how to get away from them. Make sure you always get the ball when you are alone.

“Once you get the ball, you must make sure you fully use it. Rele is the classic winger, the ones from the old days. They stood on the line and dribbled past you,” Molangoane added.
