Kaizer Chiefs boss makes bold CAF CC prediction ahead of Al Masry opener

Kaizer Chiefs begin their first-ever group stage campaign in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup with a challenging trip to Egypt, where they face Group D rivals Al Masry at the Suez Stadium on Sunday.

Ahead of the clash, Club Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. expressed pride and excitement at seeing Amakhosi back on the continental stage.

“I’m very excited. This is the African stage – it’s where we want to be,” he told kaizerchiefs.com before the team’s departure on Wednesday.

Chiefs have been drawn into what many call the ‘group of death’, featuring Egyptian giants Al Masry and Zamalek, along with Zambian powerhouse Zesco United. Despite the tough draw, Motaung is confident that the meticulous preparation over the past two weeks will serve the Glamour Boys well.

“We’re expecting a tough test in Egypt, which is renowned for its passion for football. Once we knew the draw and destinations, we prepared thoroughly. Coming off the FIFA International break, which we used wisely, we’re optimistic about delivering a strong performance,” he said. “The technical team has worked hard, and our opponents have been thoroughly analysed. There’s a positive feeling in camp about the challenge ahead.”

After Sunday’s fixture, Chiefs return home to host Zamalek at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday, 29 November. Motaung sees these opening games as crucial for setting the tone.

“Everyone in the group is playing to win, and these are two very important matches against tough opponents right at the start,” he admitted. “But we believe we pose a significant threat ourselves and are going out to get maximum points.”

Finally, Motaung paid tribute to the loyal Amakhosi faithful:

“We’re happy to bring continental football back to our fans and hope they enjoy the campaign.”

The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash between Al Masry and Kaizer Chiefs kicks off at 18:00 (CAT) on Sunday, 23 November, at the Suez Stadium in Egypt.
