Kaizer Chiefs’ DDC title defence in tatters after falling 14 points behind Orlando Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs’ title aspirations in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) look to be over following their 2-1 loss to Marumo Gallants on Sunday.

Chiefs saw their five-match winning run and a 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end when Gallants stunned them at the Dr Molemela Stadium, leaving them 14 points behind league leaders Orlando Pirates, who had won on Saturday.

Following a goalless first half, Chiefs were put on the backfoot through an own goal before they fought back to level matters from a corner but they would be reduced to 10 men, a situation that Gallants took advantage of to score the winner.

With the defeat, Chiefs are left on 26 points from 15 matches, 14 behind Pirates, but even with their game in hand, retaining their title is all but impossible now.

Pirates, meanwhile, made it five straight wins following a 2-1 win over Durban City on Saturday to take their tally to 40 points from 16 games.

Also playing on Sunday was Mamelodi Sundowns, who ensured the gap between them and Pirates would remain seven points as they ended their two-match winless run with a 3-0 hammering of Magesi FC.

Siwelele FC kept pace with Sundowns with a fourth straight win that took their tally to 32 points, following a 2-0 win over Richards Bay on Saturday.
