Kaizer Chiefs’ Mduduzi Shabalala to get AFCON wish? Latest on Appollis’ injury

Oswin Appollis was seen limping on Tuesday after representing the nation in Bafana Bafana’s friendly outing against Ghana’s Black Stars at Dobsonville Stadium.

The Orlando Pirates star was introduced in the second half as South Africa continued their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), to be played in Morocco from Sunday. Sipho Mbule’s screamer was all the Hugo Broos’ men needed to win the closely contested fixture.

However, the game didn’t end as the hosts would have wished as Appollis suffered a kick on his leg in the latter stages of the game. He was seen limping to the bus something that didn’t go down well with Mzansi supporters.

His injury could have seen Kaizer Chiefs attacker Mfundo Vilakazi who is on the standby list with Iqraam Rayners and Thabo Moloisane probably get a chance to compete in AFCON.

Broos opens up on Appollis injury

After the game, coach Hugo Broos cooled the nerves of the fans by giving a positive update regarding the former Polokwane City FC player.

“It [the injury] is not so bad, he just got a kick on his leg, and maybe tomorrow he will have a little problem,” he stated.

“But okay, it’s nothing major.”

The tactician has further opened up on what he is anticipating in Morocco after winning bronze in the 2023 outing.

“I think we did it very well two years ago at AFCON, and I think we can’t be happy if we don’t come back with the same result. I think this year we have to go even more.

“But this is the tournament that is very difficult, but I think we have the qualities to do it. We will try to bring gold,” he concluded.

Bafana Bafana play their first match on Monday, December 22 agaisnt Angola in Group B that also has Egypt and Zimbabwe.
