Kaizer Chiefs have endured a tough start to the ongoing 2024/25 Premier Soccer League campaign.
When Nasreddine Nabi was appointed as the new coach, the fans anticipated good news, especially after a laboured 10th-place finish in the previous campaign. For a team like Amakhosi, finishing out of the MTN8 positions was not only embarrassing but a red flag regarding the team's future.
In the summer transfer window, the Glamour Boys brought in seven players; Fiacre Ntwari, Rushwin Dortley, Bongani Sam, Gaston Sirino, Miguel Inacio, Njabulo Blom, and Bradley Cross.
Back-to-back wins against Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu respectively, gave the team a dream start to the new campaign. But things quickly fell out of place, as the team struggled to deliver across all competitions. What are the new resolutions for 2025?
The big, quality names
With a projected 16 million fans, and massive followings, the supporters have every right to be entertained. Big teams deserve big names and quality football and it explains why there was excitement with the signing of Angola international Miguel, Sirino and the return of Blom.
In the short transfer window, another name is needed at the club to motivate the youngsters. Michael Olunga, Fiston Mayele, and Peter Shalulile are some of the players who can bring back the spark with regular goals.
More clean sheets
Despite adding defensive players, Nabi and his arsenal have struggled to produce clean sheets. In the 12 games played across all competitions, they just managed two – one in the league where they have had 10 assignments, and the other in the Carling Knockout.
Fiacre Ntwari has not been assuring as he should be, while Petersen has not fully worked on his mistakes. There is hope in Bruce Bvuma but reports are rife Stanley Nwabali might join the band soon.
Technical stability
Chiefs have been changing coaches year-in-year-out. Last season, they started with Molefi Ntseki and fired him just 13 games into the campaign across all competitions. Cavin Johnson took over until the end of the season.
Nabi has clearly stated Chiefs are a long-term project and he needs time to deliver. Well, hopefully, the fans and the management will give him that time to build his squad for the future assignments.
More goals, more celebrations
One of the departments that struggled badly was the attacking. Despite the many chances created, the Glamour Boys scored just 14 goals in the 10 Premier Soccer League matches played so far in the season.
What could the fans wish for if not goals and wins? It is their wish that the team can get forwards who can deliver the same consistently.
Trophies, trophies and more trophies
Well, there are some Glamour Boys fans who have never seen their team win a major trophy. The last time the team won silverware was nine seasons ago and since then things have not been the same.
This season, they didn't take part in the MTN8 after failing to qualify. They were eliminated in the quarter-final of the Carling Knockout while consistency has been lacking in the Premier Soccer League which might cost them in the race for the title. Nevertheless, the Nedbank Cup is there for them, and the Glamour Boys might just win it if they give their best.
