Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has been cautioned against opting for experience over form during the upcoming Soweto Derby.
Chiefs will face off with bitter rivals Orlando Pirates on October 31 and while the game is still nearly three weeks away, the excitement is building.
However, former Chiefs midfielder Humphrey Mlwane wants Da Cruz to field players based on form and not go for experience, pointing to the situation of goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, who had been making mistakes before suffering an injury.
While Petersen might be recovered and ready when the derby comes up, Mlwane wants Renaldo Leaner to be handed the opportunity instead of an experienced but shaky goalkeeper.

“Petersen, he still needs to rest a bit more after the poor performance he gave before the injury; let’s allow Leaner a chance to shine and showcase his talent in a Soweto Derby. We already know what Brandon can do; now let’s see what we’ve really got in Leaner,” Mlwane told KickOff.
“If players are really selected based on performance, then Leaner deserves to start in the Soweto Derby. After what I saw in the Arrows game, I feel Leaner deserves a starting point when it comes to the Derby.
“Choosing experience of having played the Derby before over current performance might hurt Chiefs on October 31. We were all given an opportunity to play our first derby in our careers at one stage. This is Leaner’s turn to taste his first Soweto Derby.”

Meanwhile, former Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has lifted the lid on the mood within the technical bench when goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari refused to come off last season.
Ntwari had his number go up during the Carling Knockout match against Stellenbosch, when the game was headed to the penalties, but he defied the instructions, refusing to come off.
Chiefs ultimately lost the game but the incident overshowed the outcome with the player slammed for his behaviour while the coaches were criticised for having lost the dressing room.
“It was difficult for me to swallow that one,” Kaze said. “It is a lack of respect for the technical team. It’s lack of respect for the player that is coming to sub you. It’s a lack of respect for the other players that are on the bench.”
