Coach rewarded for beating Chiefs
In a gesture that highlights the gulf in resources between Kaizer Chiefs and Red Arrows FC, the Zambian outfit has rewarded coach Chisi Mbewe with a “staff vehicle” after dumping Amakhosi out of the CAF Confederation Cup last Friday.
Red Arrows edged the Soweto giants 1-0 in the second preliminary round, first-leg match in Ndola, before Chiefs levelled matters with a 1-0 win in Durban for a 1-1 aggregate scoreline. But the Zambian outfit advanced to the group stage via a penalty shootout victory.
Owned by the Zambia Air Force, Red Arrows will be participating in the Confederation Cup group stage for the first time in their history.
“The Zambia Air Force [ZAF] Commander, Lt Gen Oscar Msitu Nyoni, has fulfilled his commitment to facilitate the effective execution of Red Arrows Football Club head coach Warrant Officer Class Two, Chisi Mudala Mbewe’s official duties by allocating and handing him a staff vehicle from the Zambia Air Force fleet,” a statement from the club read.
“The Air Force vehicle, registration number ZAF-******, was handed over today, Monday, 26 October 2026, following Red Arrows’ historic qualification for the Confederation of African Football [CAF] Confederation Cup group stage.
“Speaking during the handover ceremony at Zambia Air Force Headquarters, Lt Gen Nyoni said the staff vehicle allocation was in line with established Air Force tradition, under which the Red Arrows Head Coach is entitled to an official vehicle to support the effective performance of his duties.

“He explained that the decision followed a request by the Red Arrows Football Club president for a vehicle to assist the coach in carrying out his responsibilities, assuring the Club that one would be provided when available.
“The Commander said the team’s qualification for the continental competition coincided with the fulfilment of that commitment, providing an opportunity to formally present the vehicle to W0II Mbewe.”
Why Velebayi, Shabalala are struggling
Kaizer Chiefs legend Zebulon Nhlapo has explained why Mduduzi Shabalala and Asanele Velebayi were unable to convert their chances in the CAF Confederation Cup match against Red Arrows.
Missed opportunities from Shabalala and Velebayi proved costly for Chiefs, who failed to secure a place in the Confederation Cup group stage.
“The players will gain experience. What let them down on Friday was panic. They do not have much confidence at the moment. The supporters should give them a chance and allow them to make mistakes,” Nhlapo, said as quoted by KickOff.
“Football is difficult when you lose the support of your own supporters. You can end up overthinking. Penalties are like a lottery, so it is not too bad. You cannot blame someone for missing a penalty because it is not intentional. It was not our day.

“Given the chances we wasted, we should have finished the match in 90 minutes. In football, you may get only one opportunity to score, so you have to take your chances. Let us encourage the players to correct their mistakes in their next match, especially with the Soweto Derby approaching. They rushed their shots once they entered the box. They need to take their time and pick a spot.
“They lack confidence,” he concluded.
Frosler confident Chiefs will deliver in the Carling Knockout
The Carling Knockout will hand Kaizer Chiefs an immediate chance to flush their CAF Confederation Cup frustrations down the drain with wingback Reeve Frosler positive of their hopes.
Chiefs host TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium on Tuesday (19:00) in a first-round match. This game comes just four days after they came stuck against Red Arrows.
”It’s disappointing falling out of the CAF competition. ‘The guys did well to try and get back after the first leg in Zambia, but it just wasn’t meant to be. But now our full focus goes onto the Carling Cup,’’ Frosler told the club website.
”TS Galaxy have been a tough opponent for us in the last few games. But it’s a cup competition and cup games are always different. We will look to put our best foot forward on Tuesday and try and go all the way in the Carling Cup.

”We have ambitions of wanting to win a trophy and this gives us an opportunity to try and do that. Obviously, we’ve got the (Soweto) Derby coming up on the weekend as well, but our attention is on TS Galaxy now and will use the game as preparation for Saturday,” he added.
