Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is refusing to give up on the title race even as his team trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by nine points and second-placed Orlando Pirates by eight.

Chiefs head into the Soweto derby on 14 points from eight games and while many have already ruled them out of the running, the goalkeeper maintains that they can still close the gap.

Petersen hopes the Glamour Boys can start by winning the Soweto derby on Saturday which would see them narrow the gap with Pirates to five points.

“The season is still very long and for me, you fight until the end. It doesn’t matter what the gap is or what the gap looks like now,” Petersen told the media on Thursday.

“Obviously, three points would be very important for us in closing that gap but that does not mean anything. For me, it is fighting until the end and making sure that come the end of the season, we gave a good account of ourselves.”

Bobby Motaung explains current role at Chiefs

Meanwhile, Bobby Motaung has explained what his current role is at Kaizer Chiefs.

Motaung has taken a laid-back approach in recent years, having been actively involved in the day-to-day running of the club before, when he was Football Manager.

He was also responsible for signing some top players who brought success to the club but now, Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr looks to have a more prominent role.

“There’s certain things we can’t step aside from, the Chiefs legacy, the chairman’s legacy,” Motaung said on Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“I’m part of the family. I’m part of the organisation. I’m serving the organisation. We’re serving. The game has grown. The challenges have grown. There are more hands in the game.

“There are more technical issues happening. There are more dynamics. There are more new technologies. Things are happening.”

“The game has grown, but you give a chance to change and to grow, old school is there, but remember, there’s new things happening, technology and others,” he further stated.

“So my focus is more about giving back with experience and supporting the new generation. And I think the new generation, for them to learn and to know, it takes a bit of experience.

“Experience you only gain when you go through thick and thin, but I’m there as the elder one. I’m there through and through. I’ll never depart. I’ll never be away. I’m part of the system.”
