Kaizer Chiefs shift attention to Sweden-based midfielder

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly turned their attention to Sweden-based Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux as they look to bolster their squad.

Le Roux currently plays for Swedish top flight side IFK Varnamo, where he has been since moving from Dutch side Volendam this year, and it is still not clear if a deal could materialise in the January transfer window.

However, according to Soccer Laduma, Chiefs feel the midfielder can add some quality to their ranks and have turned their attention to him after some of their other targets such as Polokwane City winger Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi of AmaZulu proved difficult to acquire.

“They are looking at boosting their midfield whether with a winger or a N.10 and Le Roux is one of the players they are looking at. It is all about the scouts and recruiters who suggest these players to the technical team as well as management,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

Le Roux’s stint in Sweden has seen him play consistently and it is not known if he would be willing to leave Europe and return home, having last played in South Africa in 2018, while on loan at Stellenbosch FC.

Will Chiefs lure Le Roux back home?

“Even if we say they have the money to bring him back home like they did in the past with players like Bernard Parker, Tshepo Masilela or even Keagan Dolly, it will depend on the player himself whether he wants to come back home or not. It will be interesting to see what happens to him in January and Chiefs are crossing their fingers to at least sign a player that both management and technical team agree upon,” a second source told the outlet.

The SuperSport United academy graduate has received a number of Bafana Bafana call-ups but has not been a regular so far and there is a belief among the Chiefs camp that he could be persuaded to move back home to help him nail down a place in the national team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, his agent Mathew Moore does not think a move in January is possible given the many midfielders at Chiefs and is looking at the possibility of his client receiving offers at the end of the current season.
