Kenya bank on Benni to make Harambee Stars ‘Superpower in Africa & beyond’

Football Kenya Federation is convinced South Africa legend Benni McCarthy will make Harambee Stars a force to reckon with in Africa.

The 47-year-old has been a free agent since his exit from Manchester United where he was serving under the then-manager Erik ten Hag as the club's strikers' coach. He has initially coached AmaZulu and Cape Town City in the Premier Soccer League.

Harambee Stars are hoping to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup for the first time in history after failing to make the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

FKF's Head of Communications and Media, Jeff Kinyanjui, has revealed why the federation settled on the former striker to coach the national team after Engin Firat left.

“The coach will be officially unveiled on Monday and details [of his contract] will be out [then],” he told SNL24.

“Benni [McCarthy] is a high-profile coach and we are happy to have him. We are looking forward to having him help us become a superpower in Africa and beyond.

“The new Football Kenya Federation administration is eager to improve the standards of football in Kenya, and the senior National Team is one of the key assets. Therefore, getting Benni to manage Harambee Stars is a step in the right direction.”

Kenya will be co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Tanzania and Uganda. McCarthy will be aiming at building a competitive squad to ensure the East Africa nation will be having a say in the biennial competition.
