Khanyisa Mayo on target as CR Belouizdad bag rare win

South African forward Khanyisa Mayo scored his second goal in as many games for his Algerian side CR Belouizdad as they won just their third league game of the season on Sunday.

CR Belouizdad had won two matches in eight league games prior to Sunday’s clash at home to ASO Chlef and were desperate for a positive result especially after also starting their CAF Champions League campaign with a 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates.

They had to wait until the added minutes of the first half when they broke the deadlock via the penalty spot through Aymen Mahious and eight minutes after restart, they were celebrating a second thanks to Mayo.

Against the run of play, the South African slotted home while inside the box after being teed up when the CR Belouizdad players outnumbered their opponents in the penalty area.

Mayo has had a frustrating stay in Algeria

They held on to claim a massive three points that lifted them from 12th position to eighth on 13 points, five behind CS Constantine, who lead the standings after 10 games, although Mayo and his team-mates have a game in hand over them.

It completes a good week for Mayo, who opened his goal account for the club on Tuesday, when he scored the consolation in their Champions League loss to Pirates.

The former Cape Town City star has not enjoyed a good stay in Algeria so far, having turned into a substitute as he has started four of his eight matches at the club but never managed to play 90 minutes.

That has seen rumours of a return to South Africa surface with Kaizer Chiefs, who he was heavily linked with before moving to Algeria, mentioned among the teams interested.
